This time of year usually brings a number of annual rituals: Thanksgiving; Black Friday; Cyber Monday. And “Elevate Your Status,” the promotion during which Delta allows their elite frequent flyers/Medallion program members to purchase MQM, MQS, and MQD in order to help retain their current status levels — or jump to a higher tier. Only a few weeks ago, René wondered if Delta would hold the annual sale that’s seen prices climb to $5,000.
And now we have our answer.
This year, Delta is suspending its tradition of selling MQM, MQS, and MQD. The airline made the announcement on its website.
Frankly, I’m a little surprised. Yes, Delta graciously extended its Medallion members’ elite statuses for a year and will roll over all MQM to 2021. But the airline needs money — and there may be some elite flyers wanting to advance to the next Medallion tier ASAP.
Sure, people can take mileage runs — a practice which may become more complicated with reduced flights and lockdowns reintroduced. But MQD are a stumbling point for some people — especially those trying to reach Diamond but can’t take advantage of MQD runs this year.
So one could reasonably think Delta would try to cash in a bit and sell their virtual wares.

I wonder if Delta is contemplating a promotion next year and doesn’t want to increase the number of “artificial” elites – maybe something like how Marriott credited half the status requirement?
Also surprised Delta did not go for this money grab this year.
Actually, I am not surprised that they didn’t do it this year. Remember that delta “spun off” skymiles to get a loan. I wonder if selling the skymiles goes to skymiles company and not delta directly?
I am no expert on this, but I don’t know how skymiles gives the money it earns by selling mqms/mqds to delta.
