Safety First
The first is this travel harness safety system that connects to airline seatbelts.

The harness wraps around the entire seatback. We must briefly unlatch the tray table of the person sitting behind her and slip the red strap pictured above into place. Then we simply stow the tray table again. The belt doesn’t impede any tray table or other functions.
Never has the person behind her complained. In fact, most of them are intrigued by the harness.
The only time I had difficulty getting the tray table back up was in a CRJ (shocking, I know). A few tweaks and all was good.
Now Hear This!
The other item she loves is this unicorn headband — with built-in earphones! (Don’t worry. Several different styles are available if unicorns aren’t your kid’s thing. It also comes in Batman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a pirate, and an array of other styles.
Our only problem with these? My daughter doesn’t want to take them off!
The earphones are volume-limited. So no matter how much she cranks up her tablet’s volume, the earphones shouldn’t blow out her hearing.

Chris, this is timely for me since we’re going to be taking a trip with our almost 2 year old. Did you have any concerns going with the non-FAA approved harness?
@Guarav: We weren’t too concerned and no flight attendants said boo, so we were OK.
That’s good to know. When we traveled internationally on EK with a bucket car seat the pursed insisted that we show her the flight approval language on the seat (to be fair it was printed on a very hard to see location on the seat).
