The TSA confiscated a rather interesting souvenir yesterday: a missile launcher.
TSA officers detected the weapon in a passenger’s checked luggage at Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI).
A press release says the man told agents he is active duty military personnel returning home from Kuwait. He simply, you know, wanted to keep the missile launcher as a souvenir.
Snowglobes and t-shirts: pfft, amateur hour keepsakes!
The missile launcher was not a live device. The state fire marshal assumed the firearm for safe disposal.
“Military weapons are not permitted in checked or carry-on bags,” the TSA tells us. #TheMoreYouKnow

Unless things have changed, that SM has more to worry about than TSA. That is a turn in item that has to be accounted for (on the range). He’s definitely in trouble with the military. If someone (from the military) helped him take it, they’re in trouble too. EOD will probably pick it up from the fire marshal.
As a side note, it was my understanding that pistols and rifles (military or civilian) are allowed in checked bags, with prior notice given to the airline (contrary to the last sentence credited to TSA). Then again, all my info may be outdated.
If it was demilled, inert or unable to fire he may have had clearance to remove it (I have one in my office). Essentially this is a carbon fiber tube with a scary mil paint job.
I may be an outlier on this one but this strikes me as much more drama it warrants. Makes for a great press release but it’s just TSA Theater, IMHO.
