I am sorta embarrassed to admit it but I have never owned a carry-on spinner. Before you do an “eye roll” and start telling me how amazing they are and how they are the only way to go, know that I tend to be a backpack type traveler so other than my laptop bag I have not seen the need for a larger carry-on bag. But now I get it after having had a longer trip with this Samsonite Winfield. <-LINK
First off the things I love. When flying Delta, and any airline really, you have to make sure your bag is going to fit not just in the overhead but also into the airlines carry-on size checker units. In the case of Delta you most of the time simply have painted on the wall our counter of boarding a measurement tool that the agents can use to verify the size of your bag. But other times you have a real Delta size check box if you will. As you can see this Samsonite fits no problem even with the wheels.
Next, I love that it does also fit well into the overhead on all the Delta jets I was recently on other than CRJ200s that, as we know, have limited bags that fit onboard without issues. I can go wheels in first and stand it on it’s side and it is a quick slide in and out with the hardened plastic.
Lastly the handle is not flimsy as some bags I have pushed around before I decided on this one and the wheels roll like butter. WoW do I now see the advantage of spinners vs. just a bag with two wheels to drag behind. Also, when I do have to gate check the bag, I like the built in TSA approved locks (kinda nice to have vs zip ties) . Not that I am suggesting anyone at Delta would try to open my bag but still it is nice to have the feature.
But I mentioned it is missing one feature I wish it had – a side handle would be really nice. It is really not an issue when flying as the only time I would need a side handle would be if I had to put it into a size check unit but the other time it would be nice is in and out of the trunk of my car. Maybe a little thing but when looking at other units that have this, at this quality level, it just was not worth the additional cost.
Either way I am thrilled that the proceeds of my million miler bag Delta sent me let me get two of these (one for me, one for my wife) and still have funds left over for other travel toys! – René

With spinners you will probably now find yourself hating concourses with carpet. One must exert a lot more energy to push on a rug than on a hard surface. I still like the spinners though.
Agreed. Spinners are simply a no go on carpet. Better off just rolling them as if you had 2 wheels.
Best spinner IMO: Briggs & Riley
Lack of a side handle is definitely an issue..very annoying. Also, if you are pushing it ahead of you on an uneven surface and it catches, prepare to trip and go head over heels (speaking from experience). I prefer to pull behind with my computer in my backpack.
When I clicked through to Amazon to view it (nice price btw!) it shows it has a side handle. Is this a new addition to the version 2 of the bag?
I might have to buy one of these. It has great reviews and that price is amazing.
I absolutely HATE spinners. My wife has one and on the rare occassion when I am pushing, pulling or fighting with her bag it reminds me of why I hate them. Additionally on a sloped jetway the valet checked spinners just roll away!
