Exciting upgrades planned for “THE CLUB” network of airport lounges.

Recently I had a chance to stop by THE CLUB at PHX and will have a review of this lounge later this week. While small, and not really centrally located for Delta flyers, it has a lot of nice features with more on the way.

I spoke with the location manager, Travis and was told that both short term improvements as well as long term expansion plans are scheduled by 2018. This is needed due to the size of the club and the agreement for the lounge from 3:30PM onward it becomes exclusively a British Airways and One World club However, if you are a Priority Pass member like those who old the non-Delta Platinum cards, and can get in before 3:30, you may remain.

The really exciting information that was shared with me was the model for the changes on the way for the Phoenix club. Not just this club, but the network will be based on THE CLUB at MCO including either one or a number of shower rooms per club.

And these changes are not just limited to remodel of existing clubs, but the network is looking to build a number of new clubs and expand what airports you will find their lounges in.

All of this is really exciting news to me as we have already seen the Manchester Group who first built the Escape Lounge in MSP and are now adding them in Boston and Oakland. Additional 3rd party lounges, either part of or even stand alone, with highly competitive features will press the Delta Sky Clubs to keep improving their offerings without charging more for services or offerings.

Lastly it will be interesting to see just where American Express decides to expand the Centurion lounge network that always has a real impact on whatever airport they enter. – René

Thanks for this. Wondered why the Club hours at PHX were what they are, now I understand. There are a couple of fortress hub airports in the US that have no alternative lounge facility beyond their key airline’s. PHX, CLT and ORD come to mind. I’ve found the Club lounges at ATL and SJC particularly useful as Priority Pass (or DinersClub) affiliates and wish there’d be one at CLT and ORD (even if it meant long treks between linked piers to the gate of the carrier I’m using) or the the PHX lounge would stay opened beyond the BA departure and revert back to a PP lounge. One hopes that Amex would also consider a Centurion lounge at CLT and PHX, if not ORD and EWR.

Do you have more info about the lounge they’re adding in Boston? Which terminal is it in (they aren’t connected airside, so it really matters)?

It’s annoying that so many US airports have terminals that aren’t linked together airside. JFK, LGA, LAX, and ORD come to mind.

That’s a major obstacle to more 3rd party lounges IMO.
