Today is a very special day for me as it is the 5 year “blogiversary” of RenésPoints blog. Can you believe that I have been sharing Delta and other travel bits every day for that long now? I am humbled and truly in awe and as I look back over the past 5 years there are some interesting insider highlights that I thought I would share with you.
Day one of the blog was thrilling and terrifying for someone like me with dyslexia. I have to admit to feeling a gripping fear over those first few days that I would ever post anything slightly wrong or maybe inverting some number – it did keep me up some nights! Oh that and being the official launch site for Skymall when they “had” to unload millions of SkyMiles by the end of the year!
December, my first full month of blogging, was truly a whirlwind and I was tickled that so many came to visit a brand new travel blog. It felt like being shot out of a cannon!
I was also somewhat concerned this past year over my blog re-branding but I need not have worried one bit as RenésPoints readership has continued to keep climbing since then and strongly so this past year with October 2016 being my biggest month ever in reader visits.
And that number above just blows my mind that nearly 7.5 millions views have landed since my first day of posting 5 years ago.
I was also hoping that I could break 10,000 followers on Twitter but I ended up just a tiny bit short. It’s OK – give it a few more weeks and that milestone will be met as well.
That is a lot of numbers. The reality behind all these numbers is what makes me so happy. Over the years I have loved helping so many readers with all things Delta. From earning elite status to finding the lowest priced awards with their SkyMiles. Few things make my day more than a reader sending me a quick note of thanks because something worked better from the advice here on the blog.
I also have really enjoyed holding Delta to account for all the positive, and negative, changes to the award and elite program. Their PR department does the best they can to sugarcoat nasty “enhancements” and often do not go far enough when it comes to real improvements of how we can best take advantage of them all. That is fun and I love maxing out every program perk we can.
Looking forward I have no idea what’s next. Despite SkyMiles collection being dead to me there can still be great values if you cherry pick award sales and the like and being able to instantly transfer Membership Rewards to Delta keeps me in the game. That and the fact that the elite program still is one of the best if not the best for my travels in the USA. Let’s hope during the next 5 years Delta continues their slow but steady program improvements.

Rene, keep on flying and maybe we will meet someday soon. In the mean time when you next talk with senior Delta staff, ask them how much they spend repairing scooters and power chairs they break in the cargo hold. While I still have 1 more trip to Tokyo to go, by the time 2016 ends, Delta will have spent over $50k repairing or replacing my power chairs!

Since you are a SBN traveler, I have a near disaster story to share. ANd if anyone else out there is new to SBN, listen up!
I found good skyMiles award seats out of SBN to AMS a couple of years ago. Way better deal than I could get out of IND or any larger cities.
Got there very early – at least 3 hrs. early I think. Sat out near the ticket counters, shopping, using phone etc. as we found decent chairs there and I thought that maybe once we cleared security there wouldn’t be much there in a small airport.
So maybe 45 min. before the flight, I told my auntie we should go ahead and get closer to the gate. ((I always go to the gate early in general to see my place on wait list for First etc., but since that was not an option on award seats, that’s another reason I goofed at SBN and stayed away from security and thus the gate for at least 2 hours.)
Once we got to the gate, they were announcing – Last call for passengers * AND OUR NAMES!!! They said we want to leave early and everyone else was onboard long ago. “We have been calling your names over and over.”
OOPS -we did not know that the gate announcements were not coming over the P A system we had been hearing on the other side of security. So we would have missed our connection in ATL to AMS and had a heckuva mess to deal with on my auntie’s first trip abroad.
And of course you know, there are lots of seats etc. past security at SBN and my assumptions about a small airport vs. the tiny Liliput type facility I’d expected were all wrong.
Morals of story – SBN is a real airport with seating at the gates, etc.. Never assume anything. Follow your regular routine that has worked for a gazillion other flights and go through security to be near your gate ASAP in case something significant changes. I felt like such a newbie and fool after nearly missing our big trip that day!
