IASS Executive Lounge NRT Narita Airport review RenesPoints blog - the worst lounge i have ever visited (1)

When I travel I love to visit airport lounges. Most times they are an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the not so nice parts of the travel experience. A chance to refresh and enjoy a pleasant snack and refreshing drink or two. To relax in comfortable seats and surroundings. Notice I said most times.

My plan for this trip, had we not been delayed for hours due to the Delta cargo people almost turning some dogs into dog-sickles (see 777 review), was to visit this and the neighboring Priority Pass (PP) lounge when we landed. With the delay, and the help desk at NRT incorrectly insisting to me that this lounge was after security, the result was a visit before our trip home.

If you looked at the review of the observation deck, and can find that, you will also find the two lounges open to you as a PP card holder, that is, they are located in Terminal 1 between the north and south connector.

The lounge is open from 7:AM until 9:PM each day but the closed times may be the best part about this lounge.

As you can see from the opening shot there are a number of ways to access this lounge. I used my PP card for entry at no extra fee.

We were welcomed into the lounge, shown magazines that were available (as well as some newspapers).

Just ONE drink for you! 🙁

Also we were cautioned that we could ONLY have one alcoholic drink for our visit. One (not that there was much to choose from anyway)! It was early NRT time but I had been up since 2AM staying on US time but still decided to just have some juice.

Breakfast? Enjoy?

Then there were the breakfast options. Err, I mean snack options. There was this! Impressed? Yeah, me neither. Oh just wait for the rest of the tour of this lounge.

Got concrete?

Then we have the seating room. One big box. And there were those seats. Folks, concrete would almost have been softer to sit on than these seats. I am not kidding. These were the hardest things I have ever sat on.

A room with no view

I could go on and on but hard plastic chairs at the gate were softer. The only possible redeeming quality this lounge could have maybe had to an AVgeek like me was a view of the runway, but if that is what was on the other side of the window in this lounge it was covered by big curtains as you can see.

By the way the lounge next door to this one, also a PP lounge, from outside the door did not look any better than the IASS lounge so I did not even bother going in to review that one.

Folks, I have never been to a lounge and said the gate area is better, until now. What a complete disappointment. If you find yourself with some extra time in NRT before your flight go visit the observation deck rather than this lounge. Then, once you are through security, you have a number of clubs that are worth your time! – René

I can tell you…the other lounge is even worse. At least the IASS one was recently renovated. The other one doesn’t offer any alcohol or snacks and has terrible instant coffee instead of the slightly better drink dispenser in the IASS one. These lounges are only good if you need wifi to work upon arrival. Otherwise, they are useless!

@Christian – Agree. Only redeeming quality is reasonably fast free wifi.

I visited the IASS lounge in Terminal 2 – Basically the same exact tiny layout with rock hard seats and extremely limited food/bev options. Except there’s no runway views. Or windows. It’s probably the most depressing lounge I’ve ever been to.
