Today I wanted to review both of the new (ish) Delta One black hard shell and the gray soft shell amenity kits both for the contents and, as Delta suggested to us to do, reuse them for other things when we travel. Clearly the reason for the kits, for most folks, is for use onboard, but for me I really do value them more for their after flight use so that is an important evaluation of these kits.

What I want to do with this review is first run all the photos for you too see then at the bottom of the page have my thoughts on them all. You can click on any of the photos for a full screen slide show of each one. Let’s dive in:

Both of the kits include the exact same products so that does not change. The quality of the items is much up to each person’s taste. The Tumi pen, for example, is square. Some will love this others hate it from its non traditional shape (I like it). I hate the liquid type lip balm Tumi uses others think its perfect. The socks, to me, are ugly jail house style and are also VERY thin. Eye shade is of decent quality and does not stink of chemicals like the coach one does.

But what does change is which of the two can hold a larger or better quantity of our “stuff”?

Delta Tumi Delta One Amenity Kit Review Black and Gray RenesPoints blog (21)

Also is one “better” than the other. You would think that the hard shell is automatically better. Maybe. Let’s look at a few examples.

Delta Tumi Delta One Amenity Kit Review Black and Gray RenesPoints blog (22)

Notice my absolute most important travel item my massive 20k dual USB travel brick (love it) that can recharge my phone over and over and over again. It happens to fit perfectly into the hard case with lots of room to spare. Almost too much but I can add a few other bits. In the soft case it fit but was harder to get in and out.

But the hard case is not the clear winner. I also travel with Tripp Lite surge protector and spliter (plus dual USB power) and a Microsoft Blue Tooth mouse but those two in the hard shell case made it impossible to close but they did nest nicely into the soft-shell one. So in this case we have a win for the gray Tumi kit.

I think long term I will still favor the hard shell case. We shall see. Have you tested the two kits for after flight use. Do you have a favorite? – René

@Chip – Just a “look”. Maybe they don’t even get socks in jail. Not sure.

So has Delta actually officially recognized you as a MM? Really does NOT count until Delta says so … you may still be a WANNABE!

I have both cases and love both of them.
The soft one is a good cache 5 under things. The hard one is wonderful for electronics as you said. I do LOVE the socks-they remind me of a Cheshire Cat 🙂
And they have personality.i actually prefer their thin weave to wear with fashion boots.
I preferred the Jura amenities over makin and Goetz -oh well they are both nice.
I DO like the pen and mini mouth wash.
It would be fun if they changed up the interiors or have you a choice of colors as does KLM ! I’m happy with both packages and they are well used AFTER the flight!!

I actually love the new striped socks and prefer the thinner fabric. My teenage daughter wears hers with her combat boots and looks adorable.
But I can’t decide if I like the hard or soft case best. Nice to have both.

I find the soft bags a better choice for cables. I have lots of previous Tumi bags and the old tan Delta bags. I just love ’em for holding phone cables and chargers. I even include the plug converters for Europe and the UK. Friends ask me how I keep these things so organized and I just give them one of these bags. It is a shame that so many of things get thrown away by the plane cleaners.
