If you do not have time for a float plane ride, you may have enough time to at least visit the Alaska Air Museum right next door to the airport.
I mean right next door as it is only a few minutes walk to get there.
I had some time to visit this location for Alaska aviation history. It really was a fun visit.
The first thing you see (out of shot, sorry) is a short control tower. You are welcome to go in and go upstairs and sit and watch float planes take off. I was in geek heaven!
There is so much aviation related stuff everywhere you look that is it hard to take in. Think Rome and ancient artifacts and you get the idea.
The web page for the museum says their goal is:
“THE MISSION OF THE ALASKA AVIATION MUSEUM: PRESERVE, DISPLAY, EDUCATE AND HONOR THE HISTORY OF ALASKA AVIATION”
And they do that with great enthusiasm. I was so warmly greeted and first given a chance to fly a simulator they built. It was really neat and the headset made it feel almost like full immersion.
Then I was told the basics about the museum and left on my own to explore. I would be doing a complete injustice trying to sum up all the history, background and information they have amassed, but just know how stunned I am at what it takes and took to fly in and out of this rugged state!
When most folks think of exploring this great land I think they think of covered wagons and the western states. This place makes you see what it takes to do that from the air in rugged and not so rugged machines! 🙂
In addition to a number of older jets, including an old one from Alaska Air, another building houses even more with planes suspended from ceilings and all around the hanger. A number of them are still works in progress.
I so enjoyed my brief visit to this bit of Alaska history from the air. I hope you make the time to stop by next time you are in ANC or even if you just have a few hours on an Elite Mileage Run that way – René
