For someone who 90% of the time stays at SPG hotels (as an SPG Platinum), it is always interesting to see how other chains stack up to SPG in terms of product, service and quality. For some reason the Club Carlson “Park Inn” brand has never really impressed me, but this sure changed 180* for me after this stay at the Park Inn by Radisson Stockholm
This stay was part of my efforts to burn as many Carlson points as I could before one of the best features of the Club Carlson card was whacked on 1JUNE15, that is, basically getting two nights for the price of one in points.
I had not really planned on staying at this location, but the Club Carlson property downtown was all sold out by the time I booked and even this hotel only had one room at BOGOF and the next room was full points for both nights.
Still, considering I HAD to be near downtown Stockholm and the price for even this location outside the heart of downtown was running over $200 a night, I got great value for my points.
Plus, I was simply blown away by how great the staff was at this hotel. from check-in to just about any request I had they were more than happy to help. My ONLY complaint was there was no free parking, even for a Club Carlson GOLD member, but they were kind enough to assign me a parking spot right off the elevator. This was very helpful since I was traveling with my near 90 year old mom who has mobility issues.
Not only were they kind in regard to parking but they also honored my request for adjoining rooms. Maybe not the most amazing views but that was not important to me for this stay.
The room was clean, fresh and just fine and very typical for a Swedish mid-range hotel.
One thing most American visitors are not used to is “pillow blankets” that is, as a direct translation, a blanket stuffed inside a massive pillowcase as your top sheet and blanket. I grew up with these but still, just know this is normal.
Work desk area was small but fine and clean. Wifi speed was just fine too and free as a Gold member.
Bathroom was fine other than the fact that I really hate it when a shower does not have “full” doors, that is, as you can see in the photo, only one door to stop water from going everywhere. This results in a cold-ish shower.
Breakfast was included free as well and was a VERY nice spread. Again, for not being a high end hotel the food choices were just impressive and I was very pleased.
To be fair most Swedish hotels include breakfast for their guests, but this was above what I expected and I was most pleased.
I would in a heartbeat return to this hotel for the service, perks and quality. Now since I no longer collect Club Carlson points due to the program changes that is unlikely but not due to the hotel.
I would also warn you that, even though only a few kilometers outside of downtown, the traffic in the morning and the evening (if driving) can take over an hour at painfully slow speeds.
Overall this Park Inn visit changed my attitude toward the brand and that is impressive to me. Both the stay and that just one stay can have that impact. Next up what it is like renting a car in Sweden and my Hertz experience. – René
