Noticed something missing on Delta flights the past few weeks? New snack baskets are “enhanced” that is downgraded when meal served? What about C+?

newish delta snack basket

There is no way this will not sound #FristWorldProblem-ish so I am embracing rather than dodging it in this post. You see, in Delta business class (they call it 1st class 🙁 ), they bring around a snack basket on most flights. Oh, don’t worry, soon in C+ you will get some kind of snack basket also but we have not been told just what it will contain.

the snack basket 1st class delta points blog

The basket you see on top is the newest one, and below the older one. Rather than the old wicker basket, that I am sure was somewhat hard to keep clean, now it has been replaced with a plastic one that can be cleaned (we hope). The new stuff is highlighted with yellow arrows. They are:

  • Beyond nummy caramels from SandersCandy.com. They, even in bulk, would cost us 70 cents each. Take these home to your loved ones if you can, as TexasYankee says, have them somehow “drop” into your bag!
  • Next comes kind of a cracker that seems like a chocolate cookie. Not bad but rather on the sweet side if you ask me (you may have another opinion and feel free to share it)
  • Lastly some kind of nasty spicy trail mix that should be avoided at all costs (well I think the squirrel mix is just nasty but you tell me).
  • Bananas are hit and miss and sometimes perfect, sometimes WAY over ripe, sometimes under ripe (yeah I know it is a natural product).

So the first two, especially the salted chocolates, are truly good upgrades to the snack basket. However, I have discovered a disturbing trend flying around and somewhat confirmed by several FAs. You see, when a meal is served on a Delta flight, you DO NOT get these goodies but just what you see pointed out in RED (minus the bananas).

So you end up with a BASIC (just to using Delta vernacular here) basket with Biscoffs, pretzels and peanuts. Oh joy! BASIC coach fare in business 1st class (I bet you are beyond thrilled you clicked BUY NOW on the Fly Delta App and got this basket of goodies).

Seriously, is there anywhere Delta will not cut perks to save a dime? I also asked the mothership about just what kind of basket C+ could expect to get when OFCMB seats were announced and I was told something like the 1st class basket. Do they mean the ENHANCED one or the BASIC one? If the BASIC one, who the heck cares as it is not an improvement over the stuff we get now in economy comfort, err, C+!

I guess what I would love to know is what are you seeing readers? On meal flights, lunch or dinner, are you getting the better basket or the coach one? Also, what kind of treats will you expect to see in the C+ seats coming in less than two months now? – René

What do you expect? I’m a health conscious person who counts calories so I seldom eat the meals in first-class on a longer flight. There a lot of gullible types out where who think they’ll be getting the snazzy lie-flat beds, etc. that are advertised when they buy domestic first-class. I just wish Delta would give me the option to select a meal say 72 hours ahead of time and pay for it on any flight. Some of the European airlines do this. I’ve had some great caprese sandwiches on Air Berlin for about $15 on a 90-minute flight in Europe.

They had the Sanders candies for a long time at the DTW lounges but they disappeared a while ago — or I seem to only be there on days they aren’t put out. I grabbed about 20 one time and the lady at the desk didn’t care. Put a little salt on them and you have great treats.

you always seems to be complaining about food. why would u want to eat airline food? all of the food and snacks are so bad for you.

@Katie – Actually I tend to PRAISE Delta food most of the time and think it is quite good (VERY good compared to AA). As far as being bad for me, well… 😉

We had the full basket on JFK-SFO, yes a premium trans-con route, but it was there. Normally there isn’t basket service, when a meal is served on the 1k flights like MIA-JFK, FLL-LGA etc. So our sample size would need to include 2:45 hr+ flights i would imagine.

Yesterday I tried it all on my flights. The spicy trail mix is very odd. I actually liked the chocolate cookie. I did miss the chips. 1st class crew did take the snacks back to economy plus and offered alcoholic drinks (in plastic no glass). I wonder if people will see this as the 1st class FA not spending enough time with 1st. It didn’t bother me, but just wondering.

What did bother me was that my bags didn’t arrive until today. Delta seriously had bag issues yesterday.

I noticed that when the “salty” chocolate caramels first arrived the Flight Attendants would do hand stands if you gave them yours … wonder how many accidentally fall into flight bags?

Thank you Graydon! I stared at the basket for 20 seconds or so in disbelief at no milanos or goldfish. Chose the trail mix thing. AWWFUL. I mean offensive awful. Is the brownie brittle no longer? Haven’t tried it. Super gun shy about the new basket. Preppy Farms needs to nestle back in to whomever needs to be schmoozed, pretty please.

Its a shame with such low fuel costs and flat airfare prices that even little things like a snack basket are going under the knife

Hard to tell from the picture, is the label on the white thing in the new basket “SHEENA”? 😀

I miss the Craisins from, what, 2-3 years ago? Craisins, bananas, Twix, Sun Chips. THAT was a great basket for me. 🙂

Delta keeps changing everything ….. I’m so dissapointed with them.(this is just in the last year or so) 1st, let’s start with taking away the $100 off the sky club. What is that about?? Then the hits keep coming….. it went from being able to bring 9 people on your reservation, to now 1 person! Then taking away comfort plus at time of booking….. now, right “after booking”. Oh let’s not forget the “snack box” that is why we are here right….. we use to get pretty good snacks on a 600+ mile trip in comfort plus a few months ago, and now…… yes, 900+ miles, with NOT so great snacks. It’s not the same, what happened?? They put in a limited few crappy snacks, now, it’s a joke. It’s all about saving a few dollars, but not remembering or I should say forgetting the people that keep #Delta in business, the loyal medallion members to you #Delta. It’s so sad delta, you would think keeping diamonds, platinums, gold medallions and other loyal delta customers happy would be important to you. I just don’t see it. I’ve flown over 90,000+ miles year to date, I still have several trips left. I wish you all would see how loyal we all are to you, but I have yet to see the loyalty back from you delta….. I have much more I’d like to say but, what does that do? Will it help with making delta a better company and better airline to fly? I’d love to share if that was the case. I’m sure there are a few of us out here that would love to see #Delta change for the better….. just stop lowering #Deltas standards. Remember #Pan Am…. I remember when Delta was trying to keep their standards.
