Well this has been an interesting run so far. Last night really was fun and it was great at long last to get the much talked about “Porsche” ride. There were some funny bits. Dave, who was in front of me, walked right past the sign with our names on it (he is sorta a new Diamond). But I stopped him before he got off the jet bridge. Next, we were teasing the elite rep on the drive that we should pop out for an In-And-Out burger as Dave had never had one and was told they would have to get approval from the station manager to do that (we were teasing but it seems like it could be done)! Too much fun.

Then on to our night flight from LAX to JFK. First was full. It looked like we were in an oversold situation and we were the first two on the list. The gate agent was ONLY offering $400 for one of us and that was really disappointing for a transcon bump. In the end we were not needed.

We arrived a bit early to JFK and went to the gate. The photo of the jet showed the new full flat seats on the seat map – the reality, as you can see from above, is this has the REALLY old business class seats that you can, btw, pick up for yourself at the now-and-then rummage sale Delta has at the Delta Flight museum. Also, the open seats for our upgrade bounced around from 8+ open to none open back to 7 open. Strange.

The service itself was good (but not great). I would say the transcon dinner service is MUCH better than the breakfast choice. At least there is wifi and power and IFE.

Next step along the way is club hopping in SFO. We are going to see how many we can visit (even if we really should not be allowed access) and then some quality time at the Centurion lounge. Check back later today for more live updates! – René

PS – Txs for many emails that Delta & AMEX are not implementing the announced reduction in AMEX Membership rewards (and other AMEX points) to Delta per year at 250k.

1:PM PST UPDATE
This update is a little out of place as I just about went right to sleep on the LAX to JFK transcon. But just before that, in the pitch dark, the FAs came around with dinner choices as this is an option in the Comfort+ seats. I will let DAVE take over the rest of the story (since I was out):

So after I was offered the two options of Turkey or Veggie, and clearly picked the meat option, I passed one these sandwiches to Rene and he shoves it in the magazine holder and conks out.

I went ahead, in the dark, to tear off half of the outside and decided to dip it in what I though was some kind of ranch dip. Later, as you can see can see from the photo, I found out it was some kind of green dip that tasted great.

I am eating this, in the PITCH DARK, with a Rum and Coke while Rene is snoring his head off. After polishing that off, and another drink, and the cookie that was also very good (it was so good I thought about opening Rene’s stash up and stealing it when he was not looking)!

I started having second thoughts about what I ate once Rene, who took the darn thing with him to photo later on, showed me what I ate. I guess I will live!

Thanks Dave for that update. Next up, my review of the AMEX Centurion Lounge SFO!

    @Rene @Dave,

So, where are you on upgrades? 0 for 4 now?
That’s a harsh reality…seeing deeper and deeper Upgrade lists especially around the holidays…

Rene, I know your overall percentage is much better than that, right?

    btw,

I hate those first class sets you have pictured (the old ones), as the leg supports never raise high enough to support your legs during sleep.

Sounds like a fun run despite the missing ups. And thanks for saying In & Out burger. Now I have the craving again…

    Rene,
Great post. Love the details. I am real curious about the upgrade situation. As a Diamond myself, it would be fascinating for us all to know what exactly put the person in front of us, in front of us, so to speak. So for example if we paid an “X” or “V” class ticket, were they on an “M” class ticket? Or if we have the Amex Delta Platinum card, do they have the Reserve card? Or if we have the Reserve card, did they have a higher booking class paid only? So many variables, but it would be fun to know where we all rank with it gets down to the nitty gritty. Also, the Porsche. Do you suppose that your blogging efforts with this mileage run caught the eye of the Special Services folks who gave you that ride, or was it just random for a Diamond person who has banked alot of flights?

Scott I have no doubt the Porche ride was due to me being there …
Also as a new Diamond and MM I have talked with many gate agents about the upgrades being missed and it seems that many many people are paying much higher prices for the tickets which gets me bumped back. I have most of the variables: paid 3yr to Skyclub,DM, MM, Delta Reserve Bus Amex, and I do early check in 24 hrs out.

JFK – SXM on 12/11, Fly Delta said every seat was taken, airport monitor said 35 empty seats in Coach. Monitor was much closer to correct.

    Not impressed

Oh, and I was #1 on JFK – LAX Sunday 9 PM – 12 AM transcon. 3 Got upgraded.

It was a mileage run, I had to have one of the cheapest seats on the plane, I think I must have been the only DM on the upgrade list
