I had planned for quite a while to spend some time at both of these clubs but due to my bumpertunity from the night before, time was now short. That left me just enough time to run in to the Delta Skyclub.
Notice that it was jammed as it always is (I see that $29+1 upcharge for AMEX Reserve card holders is having such an impact).
We have the new and improved breakfast fare fully in place and I will say the new bagels are a big step up from the old little ones. I would love to see some kind of meat plate, then with the hard boiled eggs you could actually assemble your own breakfast sandwich. Ah to dream.
Then over via the “gerbil tube” that is, underground connector, over to the T6 from the T5 concourse and the elevator up to the Alaska club to compare.
As you can see we have similar if not maybe more sparse choices. Yes, some pastries that Delta does not offer but that was about it. Until you look right and see:
Ah yes, the old 1 button pancake machine (btw Alaska, I don’t think pancakes are a ‘baked’ food) that Delta did test market for us back in April but like massage, chili and tiny sandwiches “we” i.e. member feedback must have indicated we did not want those kinds of things!
The one big difference between the two clubs is space. The Alaska club was basically empty as you can see. So if you want quiet and space maybe a walk over would be worth it.
Then it was time for my return flight back east to DTW to enjoy lunch and then, really funny enough, the same crew I had from ATL to LAX just this time the group in the front of the plane took care of me not the crew in back. Both were very good and I enjoyed the ride. I again had a Delta burger and it was good again.
On the ride home I fired up the reliable GoGo and if you recall my wife was picking me up in GRR about 2 hours away from home. I really would like to go to SBN but that kind of change would be a tall ask. AZO maybe about 1 hr closer.
I tweeted to DeltaAssist and they said they could put it in but the Skyclub would have to have the final OK. No problem on landing I popped in and they approved the change.
I then headed over to the other Skyclub in DTW, that is, where the regal jets live on the B/C side. As I was walking I checked the flight and it went from on time to a BIG delay. By the time I got to the Skyclub I found out they had no pilot and it was looking bad to fly at all.
RATS! (And I thought I was so smart)!
I then asked, with that kind of delay and issue can I switch to SBN that departs in 30 min. She said you are OK with SBN? I said sure if there is room. Deal done, text to wife, and I am boarding my flight to SBN!
I have to truthfully admit this was the only time I have EVER been overjoyed to have the non-recline last seat on a CRJ200.
I have to say the Delta folks were great about all of this and it shows you have to be ready to roll with the punches when they hit you while traveling.
All in all it was a very long trip / run / adventure. But more on my reflections as well as the final costs and how I paid for it all. As a little hint, my largest cost turned out to be the 99SEK bus ride from GOT into town 🙂 – René

The colloquial term for the machine in the Alaska Boardroom is the “Pancake Printer”.

I can actually report the opposite experience recently on a trip through LAX. In the past, I preferred the Alaska Boardroom over the Delta Skyclub, but I honestly think that with the improvements Delta has made (despite the frightfully fattening Chicken Salad) I now prefer the Skyclub over the BoardRoom (though I do love walking through the terminal tunnel).
I think that the food and selection is actually better at Delta. Sometimes there is better food at Alaska, but it’s only for a limited time. I often miss the soup and am stuck with only salad and cheese cubes. Also the sky club’s physical layout is more modern and aesthetically pleasing.

Did you purchase a Boardroom membership? Didn’t think you flew Alaska on this run. How else can someone get into Boardroom?
@Andrew – Skyclub members get in free still. (at least for now)
I second the opinion about Boardrooms vs skyclubs in general and LAX in particular. The LAX skyclub has some good reps (they sent me a bday card), but it is always crowded and has a stark feel and look.
