Some hotels really get it. The Sheraton IAH, very near the airport, is just such a hotel. We stayed at the hotel twice.
Once on the way to Hawaii as Houston was our positioning city for our mileage run.
And a second time on the return. We were only planning on staying one day but ended up two nights due to the ice storm.
I opened with the fact that this Sheraton gets it. What do I mean?
First off they recognized my elite status. A hotel that does not do that, when you work hard to earn it, is a #fail in my book.
We were upgraded to a club level corner jr. suite as they do not have full suites but this one was fine.
The room was clean, the bed was soft, and the temperature was good and worked. Same goes for the bathroom. The only complaint here was it was SO small I had to almost leave the bathroom to close the door. I mean it was tiny! Minor issue.
The Club room was fresh, clean and nice.
There were two computers for guest use but only one had a printer. The breakfast was nice and hot and more than enough and there were soft drinks when the club was not serving food. The evening snacks were nice as well and they had a “cash bar” open too. Sweet.
On our return we were put in a similar jr. suite a few floors down and the room was a little smaller but just like the first visit all went well.
We enjoyed a very nice lunch buffet on our extra “ice day” and lounged at the hotel the rest of the time.
The shuttle service to the airport takes about 10-15 from door to door and was quick and the driver was very nice. When you get to the airport you have to call for pickup btw. Speaking of nice, the staff was great. You can tell when a hotel cares for those who work for the hotel. Everyone, from front desk, to club, to restaurant to housekeeping were all just smiles and, in a good way, chatty and kind. Love it.
Bottom line this is a very nice hotel and everything was just about perfect. Also, they were good enough to allow me to book two separate reservations for the return just in case we could get out on the ice day and they would have let us cancel no charge had flights resumed. This is the kind of flexibility that makes me want to come back. I look forward to another visit to the Sheraton IAH!- René

Speaking of Sheraton, on a recent Salt Lake-Phoenix business trips I chose Sheraton to take advantage of the SPG/Delta incentive. Avoid, at all costs, the SLC Sheraton on W 500 S. The only redeeming factor was the really friendly bar tenders and the food. The rest of the place is “beat” and needs paint and TLC. The Sheraton on W. Dunlop in Phoenix, on the other hand, could be the standard by which all others should be measured. Everything, yes everything, exceeded expectations – everything. Beginning with the cleanliness and condition of the property, being upgraded and not being told (imagine the surprise at 11 PM of opening the door to a corner suite with a furnished, large private balcony), the smiles and genuineness of the staff, and on and on. Didn’t try the food there
We stayed there overnight while connecting for a flight to Cancun. We needed to heat some milk for the baby, and there was no microwave in the room. We called the front desk and asked if there was one in the lobby that we could use. In about 10 minutes, they sent a microwave to be installed in the room.
I also had a positive experience similar to yours on the status recognition. I am a measly Gold (thanks to Amex SPG Card), but this is the only property which granted Club Lounge Access upon check-in.
Rene, I’m glad you had a good experience like we did! I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone needing one near IAH. We live in Austin, however last year we flew out of IAH to go to South Africa whenever AF had some amazing deals. We stayed at the Sheraton the night before and it was great. The rooms were nice, clean, and spacious, the staff was nice, they recognized my wife’s gold status immediately and upgraded us, and the shuttle was easy (though it is crowded in the AM when everyone is flying out!). I would definitely stay here again next time we fly out of Houston!
I am glad to see that this place is getting better. My stay in July 2013 was horrid. As a 75 night plat I had two rooms booked. Neither was even on spg floor. The lounge was in a meeting room with burnt through chairs and the attendant was not very happy when I got a second pop out of the fridge myself. In the morning construction noise woke us up from the hallway at 5:30 a.m. Wifi didn’t work in our room and when I went to Sheraton Link all the computers were down. The front desk informed me that there is nothing they can do and that their provider knows about it. Now I do realize that this was during reconstruction but the hotel still charged top dollar. They comped me a few points but nothing to make up for the lost sleep. I have a stay there this May as it is only a wait between flights so I hope this is the new standard.
