The missing 15,000 Spirit Airlines miles – whose fault is it when points do not post?

I am taking up a bit of a new role now and then, that is one of points advocate. For most blog readers, the issues are ones that we are well aware of but this series should show what many run into each day in the travel world. Let’s start with an issue with Spirit Airlines and their credit card partner Bank of America. The e-mail that came in said:

“I am writing to you again regarding the behavior of people working for Spirit airlines.. I am very very unhappy with their service and even though I asked them to give me a call regarding the credit card issue that I had, nobody got back to me.. so I just had to cancel my credit card..

I was promised some miles after my card was approved but none was credited to my account. So they promise that the miles will be equal to 3 round trips which is a VERY BIG LIE. They lie to the customers and cheat them in every possible way!” – Pragya

Ouch. There is nothing more frustrating than expecting points and then not getting them. I would have loved to help fix this but my reply to Pragya was:

“Hello Pragya – I am part of a travel team and wanted to see if I could help with your missing miles. While I do not fly Spirit Airlines, I am a travel blogger so have some background with points and miles.

Unfortunately Spirit Airlines is right in this case. The party you need to get to fix this issue is Bank of America as they are the ones who are responsible for getting the points to you and over to Spirit Airlines. Since you have closed the credit card account, there is not much they can do to help you with the miles.

At this point, you could call Bank of America and ask them to reopen the account, and if within 30 days, that should not be a problem. If longer than 30 days, it will probably result in a hard credit pull on your credit score so keep this in mind and you need to ask yourself if that is worth the miles.

If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to me. Sincerely – Rene”

The offer Pragya was going for was apparently this 15,000 point offer (NOT my affiliate link btw). You and I may have differing attitudes about the value of this offer from Bank of America but that is not the point here.

When things go wrong in the “points world” there are often many players involved. For example, with an airline you may fly a partner. Did you put in your frequent flyer number or did the partner just leave it off? Perhaps the rules say you do not get full credit on partner or team flights. Maybe it is a shopping portal deal and the airline and the credit card company, neither one, have anything to do with awarding you points. Getting satisfaction and resolution can take time and make your head hurt to say the least. Most offers, if you miss any of the T&C they will not budge and you will not get your points! It is your responsibility to pay attention to all the details.

When it comes to Pragya’s case, I think some more time with Bank of America would have fixed this. But now it is a bit too late I fear. Plus, of all the credit card companies, Bank of America is one of the ones that tends to hard pull your credit score for almost anything (even when they say they will not, so be very careful).

Should I have tried to help Pragya get her points?

@asdfasd – I bet but not sure how that would apply here.

I would need more detail. Did she make a purchase as was the requirement. Did she even activate the card? Also, you can absolutely get a rt flight for 5k miles, so I am not sure why she says that is a lie.
