Aaahhh… the 70’s. Ushered in by Delta on this date with the first wide body Boeing 747 jet a mere 20 months after the first flight of the aircraft.
Necessity is the mother of all invention, so they say, and the development of the Boeing 747 was no exception to the adage. Crowded skies, reduced air fares and surging air passenger traffic all fueled the need for a larger passenger jet to accommodate it all. Aren’t we pleased the group known as “The Incredibles” were able to develop such a wonder of the skies in less than 16 months?
My wife’s first flight to Hawaii when she was 4 was on one of these wonderful birds. She only remembers it because her brother was so excited about it. They both got to visit the cockpit with stern warnings not to touch any of the 971 lights, gauges and switches. Many of my international trips back and forth to Sweden throughout my childhood were in the comfort of the 747 and it remains my favorite plane of all time. How fitting that this day, as you read this, I am flying, just not in a 747 but I can still dream right. And I did find it funny that AirForceOne, a 747, was landing right behind me at LAX yesterday! – René
