Before the 2008 Northwest merger, did you know that our Delta had acquired two other directionally named airlines? In 1972 Northeast airlines merged into the Delta family bringing Delta’s first Boeing 727’s and new routes from Boston to Miami, Bermuda and Canada. In 1987 Delta acquired Western airlines which brought new routes to Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii and Western Canada. The Northeast Airlines planes had very distinctive paint which made them famous as Yellowbirds.
Amelia Earhart was one of four partners who invested in the small New England airline which became Northeast Airlines in 1941.
As for the Red Tails, Northwest Airlines made it a trademark that was in use for over 50 years. Even today our Delta birds still sport a little red on the tails! Kinda glad they opted to drop the yellow though!
So the next time you’re jetting off to the west, northwest or northeast to name just a few options, why not sit back, relax, and have a yellowbird?! (btw never ever miss out on a free drink on Delta Medallion flyers) – Rene
