After a simply delightful flight up from Minneapolis on Delta in business class for just 11,000 Delta points plus an upgrade cert (link above) and a reasonably quick Uber ride from the Anchorage airport we arrived at the Hilton Anchorage.

a train on the shore of a river

With nightly prices running around $250-500 per night for a paid stay the use of 110,000 Hilton points that I got free from meeting the minimum spend and paying a small, $95 card fee on a new Hilton Honors American Express Business Card was reasonable to me. (See Rates and Fees.) Right now, prices are running 60,000 per night but still a solid value vs. paying for a stay.

a sunset over a city

We chose this hotel for two main reasons. First and most important, was the location. We were going to be taking The Alaska Railroad train from Anchorage to Seward to catch our cruise ship and it departed very early and we did not want to have to mess with an Uber or taxi. As you can see from the photo above, the station is just down the hill from this hotel and if you have good wheels on your luggage, it is a short walk to get there.

The second reason was the location in downtown near so many restaurants and things to do. We only had one day in Anchorage before we sailed but we had a fun day and made the most of the nearly 24 hours of light that far north.

a room with a bed and a couch

Trip Advisor reviews about this property are rather brutal with only a 3.5 average out of 5. Most of the complaints about the hotel are that it is very dated.

a room with a bed and a tv

While I see their point, and especially so for the price per night, I found it to be an acceptable stay with most things working as advertised.

a room with a bed and a chair

I will admit the wifi was sluggish and most of the time, I hotspotted my T-Mobile phone to my laptop for faster connectivity.

a room with a bed and a tv

The bed was acceptable but a bit on the firm side. Sofa, chair and other items were all comfortable and in good shape. The HVAC worked as expected unlike many complaints from others in their reviews.

a bathroom with a shower and sink

The only complaint, and one again many others experienced, was the shower. Water temperatures fluctuated constantly and made showers an interesting experience.

a city with snow covered mountains in the background

This hotel really is all about location and an amazing view from high floors. If you are, and you really should as you will see next in my review, going to take the train to your ship in Seward then this is an ideal location a short walk away with many fun things to do in town – just temper your expectation and you will have a nice stay! – René

I stayed at this hotel on the night of June 5th 2023. You are correct that the location for taking an Alaskan Railroad trip is ideal. However, I need to alert others that they should not expect decent service. As I Hilton Diamond member I used early checkin to preselect the 3 rooms for our group. Upon check in at the hotel, I was very disappointed to lean that the 3 rooms that I preselected (on the same floor) were changed to 3 widely separated floors in 2 different towers. I appealed to the front desk clerk and simply got a “brush off.” After my stay I reached out to the hotel management and never got a response. This is what hotel service has become.

I have stayed at that Hilton, probably the worst Hilton on the chain. Very dated. Place is not worth the Hilton name. Really needs a complete refurb from top to bottom.
