Are you one of the many cruisers who think of going on a cruise as a shopping opportunity? Whether you’re looking for jewelry or sightseeing souvenirs or even artwork, there is no question that opportunities abound onboard a cruise ship! Having a memento to remind you of a trip is a nice way to keep the memory of your cruise adventure alive. Maybe you have a collection of items from all of the places you have ever been to. People collect everything from spoons to bells to coffee cups to refrigerator magnets! But have you ever considered purchasing something as substantial as artwork onboard a cruise ship? Are the prices reasonable? How do you get it home with you?
Park West Galleries provides the art and runs the auctions on all of the ships in the Norwegian fleet. There is an interesting Q & A article that really covers a lot of the questions you may have regarding art purchases onboard. My wife and I have frequently strolled through the galleries onboard and at times noticed something that caught our eye, but we have yet to purchase any artwork onboard. What we prefer to do is find a local artist in one of the ports and purchase something that will remind us of the location and the trip.
What about jewelry purchases onboard? While we often look at the options under the glass onboard, we have only purchased a few items actually from the ship. We have found the prices to be much higher than what we could find in the shops we found in the ports. What you see in the photo are a few of the pendants we have purchased in our travels and each one is a memory. We have also found that the closer the cruise gets to the end of the trip the lower the prices go! We have found some decent bargains on clothing at some of the “Final Sea Day” sales onboard and this is also a great way to spend any unused non-refundable credit you might have in your onboard account!
We also enjoy taking abundant photos on our trips, as you have seen! When it comes to the Photo Gallery onboard we have seen many posing for portraits on the glass stairway or in front of a beautiful backdrop. The crew really do go all out to try to capture a photo you will love whether it’s a formal pose or a candid portside pose with a pirate!
It goes without saying that there are a great many ways to spend money shopping while onboard! The key to all of it is to find what makes you happy and gives you an opportunity to select something you will treasure with your memories of your cruise adventure! – René

Rene, I noticed that you did not mention watches. Watches are a huge part of Norwegian shopping. A watch price comparison would be nice. Also, it is incredible to me that the Dawn’s Watch shop did not stock watch batteries. My watch stopped and not a battery could be found on board.
