    Hi Rene,

Have you noticed that when you utilize your BOGO certificate from your AmEx Delta Reserve card that the ticket prices are higher than if you look for a non-redemption ticket. I’m not sure if this a function of the class of fares eligible for the BOGO certificate or if it’s just how Delta has chosen to price BOGO eligible tickets. I noticed this the first time last year (2015) as I didn’t recall seeing this in prior years when you input the certificate AFTER selecting the flights versus the current system where you have to select the certificate BEFORE selecting the flights.

    • rene says:

@DLPTATL – We have been talking about this in today’s post. Here is what you must do when this happens:
      .
You do search (if first A & I or coach LUT). You do screen shots w/out cert when you find fares that match then call and have them or supervisor apply cert and match price or else mention bait-N-switch pricing. Often must get dot-com support to help but whatever it takes = winning.

  3. DLPTATL says:

@Rene – Thank you for the reply, just saw the commentary on today’s post (5/3/16) as well. This is very helpful as the flight selections/pricing when searching BOGO fares has definitely been limiting the prospects for an optimal redemption for this year’s cert. Hoping I’m as convincing as you are on the time on the phone to get a fair fare.

  5. Aaron says:

If I use a plat companion cert, can I still do SDC (I am PM)? What about for my companion who doesn’t have status (but a SM member)? Would it have to be that there was still the same fate class in the certificate seats?

    Thanks!!!

    • rene says:

@Aaron – In the T&C of the cert it says:
      .
Changes are subject to the rules of the fare purchased and are subject to seat availability
      .
So, my guess is both would have to be GM+ to not have fee but I bet as PM you can get fee waved due to cert as it may be more of a pain to charge you than not for the rep. After that if coach BOGOF used then yes the normal SDC rules of fare class but if BOGOF in 1st then any open 1st class seat (under 1st class rules).

  6. John L says:

    Rene,

We are not big spenders but would like to get to the $25K card spend waiver. Do ATM withdrawals count as AMEX/Delta spend towards that amount? I know the APR is terrible but we pay off each month. The fee may be worth it as well one time. Out one-man contractor does not take credit.

  7. Ash says:

I was trying to use the companion certificate I got from Delta Reserve Amex card. On delta.com, from my Wallet, when I select this certificate, all my bump vouchers become grayed out. Is it not possible to pay with bump voucher on a companion ticket? If that’s the case, would calling reservation help?

  8. Ash says:

Do you mean, I have to use the Amex card, from which the certificate came from? Thanks for your reply.

  9. William says:

The companion certificate from my DL Platinum card just posted to my account. If I close the card (to avoid the AF), will Amex claw back the certificate?

  10. Sidegrade Flyer says:

Two data points for your consideration:

Traveling with an Amex Companion Certificate on 6/4 (the platinum kind, not reserve). At T-24, was offered to “upgrade” to C+ for a fee. Knowing the rules of the companion cert, I was hesitant to even try. As it turns out, I was able to purchase a C+ sidegrade for both me (FO) and my wife (no status).

On the return trip a few days later, no C+ seats were offered, even though more than 5 were available at T-24. I tried to sweet talk the GA (it was not a full flight and she wasn’t busy), but no luck. She said she wouldn’t be able to override the system even if she wanted (rolleyes). Flight left with 4 open C+ seats.

  11. Thomas Fomenko says:

    Hi Rene;
Long time follower of yours, appreciate all of the valuable insight you provide in keeping us all informed. I have been trying to book some travel on Delta through Amex travel to take advantage of that 30% points refund that I always seem to forget about via the business platinum card. My question is it seems there is no way to avoid the dreaded “e” fare in so that anything I book through Amex travel in Economy is going to not allow seat selection, upgrades, etc. Is there any work around that you can see? This issue is very difficult to search for so I apologize if it has been answered before. Thanks for your time.

    • rene says:

@Thomas – You have more things to worry about than just that – consolidator fares! Yep, readers have reported AMEX travel can code that way so your points may not be what you think they will be. To me, transfer to KLM and others is a MUCH better use than spending AMEX points to buy Delta tickets. If you want to use points to buy use US BANK FLEXPERKS as I get 4-6% back on my spend on that card #TIP

  12. jediwho says:

How many of your annual 125K MQMs do you get from credit card spending and how many are mileage runs?

  13. Chuck says:

Hey Rene – Dear Wife and I are making our first trip to Asia (Beijing) next month. I would like to get our spend while there on my Amex Reserve card. Other than Hotel, I understand that using any CC’s will be sketchy. Most advice is to get ATM PRC cash once arrived. Any Ideas? BTW – Me DM, Wife GM, if it matters.

    • rene says:

@Chuck – When it comes to China I am sorry to say I am not the one to ask. Have never been. Sorry.

  14. Marlene says:

Hi Rene – I hit my MQD waiver with my Reserve Card around the first week in September. How do I know how close I am to the $30k to get my bonus MQDs and MQMs?

  15. John says:

    @Marlene –

    There are no ‘Bonus MQD’s’

You simply get an MQD Exemption waiver (for Medallion status with Delta) after spending $25K Annually. You can, however get two MQM bonuses; one when you reach $30K in spend the second when you hit $60K spend (minus any credits, reversals and MINUS you annual card fee of $450)

You also can check your running totals online by running a Y-T-D Summary report inside your AmEx account on your account’s website.

  16. Greg G says:

Sorry if posted elsewhere, but I looked before writing this question:

I know AMEX will combine my spend from multiple Delta AMEX cards I hold towards the MQD Spend Waiver. Will they also combine my spend for the MQM bonuses? For instance, if I have a Reserve card and a Platinum card and have $15K spend on each card, do I get credit for $30K in spend towards a MQM bonuses?

Since both cards have different MQM bonus thresohlds, I assume the Reserve spend bonus of 15,000 MQMs for $30K in spend must occur on the same Reserve card and the 10,000 MQMs for $25K in spend on the same Platinum card.

    • rene says:

@Greg – MQM bonus spend is per card. You must hit each level on each card separately.

  17. Todd says:

What is the cutoff date to get the MQM bonus for hitting $30,000 or $60,000 on the Delta Reserve card? I thought it was any spending before Dec 31 but I just chatted with Amex and asked them about a delay in giving me the MQM’s for the first $30,000 and the rep told me it won’t hit until the statement billing date. She then told me the end of year cutoff is the last statement date in December. Is this what you know to be correct also?

  18. guy says:

If I buy travel insurance, will it be coded as a travel credit for the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card?

    • rene says:

@Guy – My guess is only if the airline includes it as part of the ticket price.

  19. Jon says:

    Hi Rene,
I was wondering what your opinion was for the optimal cards to hold for MR points? Obviously the new enhanced business platinum is a must, but are there any supplement cards that should be obtained to maximize MR points?
    -Jon

  20. John G. says:

Hi Rene — I have read a couple of your posts which mention redeeming FlexPerks points for higher fare classes than the lowest available. These posts were from a couple years back before Delta switched “Comfort+” to a separate cabin. I’m wondering if you know if FlexPerks points can be used for Comfort+ (Fare class W+)? And if so how is this done? My ticket in Comfort+ is under the $400 20,000 points limit but I’m not sure how to book what I want.

    Thanks!

    • rene says:

@John G – You know that is a GREAT question and I have not yet tested it. I may have to book one and try (unless you are willing to try for me and do a guest post on experience) 😉

  21. Michelle says:

Hi Rene…Love the blog — It’s always super helpful! This may be an amateurish question, but I haven’t actually seen it written anywhere…Is it possible to gift your Delta MQD exempt waiver to a person that is not a cardholder? Thx!

    • rene says:

@Michelle – Great idea but no. Only possible workaround would be add you as authorized user then you can spend on their account

  22. Bill Constantine says:

I am trying to do an end of the year mileage run to retain my platinum status and I want to use my Flex Perks account to buy the ticket and keep it under $400 for the lowest redemption value. I want to avoid buying a Basic Economy “E” ticket instead of a minimum of a main cabin class ticket. How do I know the class of ticket that US Bank is providing before actually purchasing the ticket?

I also can answer on how to get a Comfort Seat class ticket with Flex Perks; under advanced search options, use business class instead of economy class under “class of service” and it will offer W class.

    Thanks, Bill

  23. Bill says:

Rene: I called and they said that you can’t do mileage runs with turnarounds of less than 4 hours between the landing of the last arrival flight and the beginning of the return flight when I tried to book a r/t on Delta to return on the plane that I landed on. They claimed it was an airline rule which I disputed so I hung up and called back. Next rep was able to book a r/t with a 40 min layover so no problems.

    Thanks, Bill

    • rene says:

@Bill – I have book and returned on the same plane ie walked off and got back in line and flown back.

  24. Bill says:

Just found out Flexperks is charging $25 for a phone call to get the flights that were unavailable online.

    Regards, Bill

    • rene says:

@Bill – Really. Ouch. That stinks. I would ask for a supervisor to wave fee (worth a shot).

  25. John says:

    Rene
My AMEX Delta card has closed for this month (Dec 20). My next closing will be in 2017. If I purchase on this card before the end of 2016, and do not pay until 2017, will the spend/miles count towards 2016 or 2017? If I pay it off before the end of 2016, will that make a difference?
    Thank you

    • rene says:

@John – Any charges that POST in 2016 count on this year no matter when you buy or when you pay. Any charges that POST on or after 1JAN count on next year.

  26. Doug says:

    Rene,
I regular get varying sign up bonus offers for the Delta Amex cards, e.g. 15,000 MQMs on the Delta Platinum, but have never seen an offer higher than 10k sign up on the Reserve. Does Amex ever up this sign up offer? Thanks, Doug

    • rene says:

@Doug – Nope. 10k MQMs is as good as it gets. And I have NEVER “regular-ly” seen 15k on Platinum. Only once in past 5 years that I can remember and then for very short time.

  27. John P says:

Wife and I each have our own Chase Sapphire Reserve® card and we each earned the 100,000 bonus points after minimum charge. My wife is no longer traveling as much as we expected. She will generally only be on my itinerary for vacations.

We transferred her Ultimate Reward points to my account and she now has zero UR points.

If she cancels the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card just before the annual renewal, will there be a problem in terms of Chase trying to claw back those UR points out of my account?

    Thank you.

    • rene says:

@John P – Nope. But be sure to extract the $300 travel perk for this year before she cancels!

  28. Michele says:

I only travel on my husband’s travel itinerary. We each have an Amex Gold Delta card so that we each have Zone 1 boarding and free first checked bag.

Given that I only travel with my husband, the free bag benefit from my card is of no value since I get that from being on my husband’s itinerary. My question surrounds Zone 1. Does everyone on my husband’s itinerary get Zone 1 boarding or do I need to have my own Amex gold Delta card to also get Zone 1 boarding?

    Thanks in advance

  29. John P says:

    Rene,

Thanks much for your response. Very helpful!

  30. Rick says:

1.) If I reach Diamond and gift Gold to my partner, and we travel on the same itinerary, if I’m upgraded on a flight, can he be upgraded on flights too as my companion? I read that DL elites can upgrade their companions at the same level as their own elite status even if they have no status of their own. But, does the companion go to the bottom of the upgrade list, or have the same priority as the Diamond who pulls them in?
2.) If I reach Diamond and gift Gold to my partner as a Choice Benefit, can he reach Platinum/Diamond through DL Amex cc spend (by earning MQMs on his Amex DL Reserve cc/Amex DL Platinum cc) more easily than starting from Basic? In our household, that might mean a lot less annual spend than both of us trying to each reach Diamond through spend on our own individual Amex DL cards.

  31. Bobf says:

You convinced me to get the the Business AMEX Platinum card – thank you. The card now offers 5x MR points for airfare booked on Amextravel.com. Will using Amextravel.com interfere with my earning MQMs? I called Amex Travel and they said using them would be the same as using Delta.com in terms of MQMs.
    Thank you!

  32. chad says:

Rene, my wife recently received the Business amex platinum card with the 100k bonus after spend. The 50% back on booking air fare seems like a huge perk. Can we use the free FC companion ticket with it that we get from the Delta branded reseve card we have? Thanks!

    • rene says:

@Chat – Officially no. Frequent Miler has a post about a one time exception after the fact but it is a YMMV thing.

  33. Anthony says:

Hi Rene – I wanted to follow-up on Question #28 above, regarding hitting the $30,000 mark for the Delta AMEX Reserve card. will the boost only occur at the statement date or can it occur mid-period? Meaning, I was able to reach over $30,000 spend during the year, however have not received the bonus yet, is this delayed until the official statement date?

    thanks

    • rene says:

@Anthony – When you see the 15k SkyMiles hit your My Delta account that is the signal the MQMs are ready to harvest.

  34. JP says:

    Rene,

I ordered four $50 Delta e-gift certificates online using my personal Amex Platinum (non-Delta) card as I have done for years. This year, despite still having the $200 remaining credit for incidentals, Amex did not apply the credit to offset the four $50 charges (each individually made).

The details for each charge are as follows:

    DELTA AIR LINES DELTA.COM
    ATLANTA AIRPORT

    ATLANTA
    GEORGIA
    30344
    UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (THE)
    800.221.1212

    DELTA AIR LINES

    Flight Details
LOS ANGELES INTERN -> LOS ANGELES INTERN
    Passenger Name: PASSENGER/DELTA
    Ticket Number: 0060583xxxxxx
    Document Type: PASSENGER TICKET

Obviously, I didn’t purchase a ticket for $50 that runs from LAX to LAX.

Any ideas what went wrong with my approach?

    Thank you.

  35. JP says:

@Rene – So it turns out it took a few extra days, but the credit finally posted. Typically it happens the day of posting.

    Crisis averted!

    Thanks for the response.

    • rene says:

@JP – It always takes a few days from my experience. Always. Happy for another data point that all is well.

  36. Marshall says:

    Hello,

I’m planning to purchase 4 x $50 gift cards with my Amex Business Platinum card to use the $200 fee reimbursement. Can I use these gift cards to pay for the primary ticket in conjunction with the companion certificate from my Delta Platinum card?

    Thanks
    Marshall

    • rene says:

@Marshall – No. The Bogof certs must be paid for in full with an AMEX card (any Amex card and anyones Amex card).

  37. Marshall says:

@Rene – Too bad. Thanks for the reply.

  38. DC says:

    Hi Rene,

I just closed my personal reserve card in April 2017. I was able to spend $60k and received 30k MQM. Now, will I be able to apply for the business Reserve card? If yes, and assuming I spend another $60k by 12/31, will I earn additional 30k MQM?

In the terms, it said that you can only earn the boost per product. Not sure if both reserve card were counted as one product.

    Thanks!

  39. RossKoh says:

    Hi Rene
I’m about to get the Citi Hilton (no annual fee)
I don’t travel much, so I’m curious if I can book 2 separate nights back to back in the same hotel to count towards getting Honors Gold for 4 stays in 90 days.
    Thanks in Advance

    • rene says:

@RossKoh – SPG plays nice same hotel back to back. Be careful with Hilton. Also no OTAs either.

  40. RossKoh says:

    Thanks.
I book on the Hilton app, no major complaints about it.
Work takes me to Hiltons more than other chains, and most of the time I can get points for the stays.
I won’t stress about the GOLD status since I am planning an AMEX business PLAT later this year & hopefully it will still be included.

  41. Gene Krupa says:

    Hi Rene,
Are you aware of the Delta Reserve Cardmember Agreement changes?
Miles Boost award restrictions – “You can only get two Miles Boost awards for each card account. In addition, if you have more than one Reserve Card Account linked to the same SkyMiles account, you are eligible for only two Miles Boost awards each year.”
This notice is on the last page of my April statement.

  42. David says:

Hit my 25K on my platinum last week. Got a 10,000 MQM bonus applied but shouldn’t I get 10,000 regular bonus miles as well? All literature says 10K MQM and 10K bonus miles.

  43. Clark says:

Before my question, a little about my travel habits. I am a Diamond Medallion who achieves that level by domestic MQMs, MQSs and MQDs, as well as card spend. I currently have the Delta Gold Amex. I fly Delta exclusively. I am required to book my flights through my company travel department so I get no benefit by using the card for airline spend. My card spend is pretty much all personal stuff. For hotels, I typically stay in SPG 1st choice, Marriott 2nd. Those accounts are linked to each other and SPG is linked to Delta.

My spouse rarely travels with me when I go on work trips. When she does I use SkyMiles, so companion certs do me no good. In addition, if I travel for personal, I use SkyMiles as well and it has been exclusively for domestic flights.

My question is basic. Which Delta AMEX offers the most bang for the buck for me?

  44. JP says:

Question regarding Chase Sapphire Reserve®. I presently have airline tickets and car rental reservations booked through Ultimate Rewards website for trips in November 2017 and February 2018.

My annual renewal is coming up in October 2017. If I cancel my Reserve card, do I lose my reserved airline tickets and/or car rental that occur AFTER the Reserve card is canceled?

If I have to renew the card for another year to retain the booked UR reservations, I will. But I would rather not have to.

    Many thanks.

    • rene says:

@JP – Once the points are spent and you are booked you do not need to keep the card. However, you will NOT get the primary rental car coverage perk or the other travel perks of being a card member. I am personally going to keep my CSR card because the yearly $300 credit knocks this card down to a net $150/year and that is worth it to me to hold.

  45. JP says:

    Rene,

Thanks for the answer on the CSR card. I have one more question regarding the Amex Delta Gold. My wife and I each have our own Amex Delta Gold account (we’re not AUs on each other’s cards).

We always travel Delta under one itinerary that I create using my Delta account. If she gives up her Amex Delta Gold account, will she still board Zone 1 and get one piece of luggage checked free if she’s under my itinerary? Would love to lose an unnecessary annual fee.

    Thanks much!

    • rene says:

@JP – As long as together on same itinerary she gets all the perks you do. Cancel the card if you wish.

  46. JP says:

Rene, I have the Amex Platinum (personal, non-Delta) card. My wife is an AU under my account (for $175 extra).

What is the current number of people I can bring in free to Priority Pass Select lounges? I mostly travel with my family (me, wife, 2 kids).

    Thanks so much.

  47. Michele says:

I have the Citi Prestige card that features the 4th night hotel free (excl taxes and fees). I looked up the prices for rooms at Disney. The exact same rooms and the exact same dates were almost twice as much when booking through the Thankyou travel center.

If this is indicative of the “savings” I should expect, this card will be a bust.

What have you heard about the 4th night free “benefit”?

    Thank you

    • rene says:

@Michele – I personally have not used that perk as I tend to always stay free on points. You should call to book I believe.

  48. Matt S says:

Greetings: Have been on your email list for some time but first question. I am $5000 short of $60000 spend for 2017 on Delta Reserve Card. Could I purchase a fully refundable $5000 ticket for travel 10 months from now (deep into 2018) and cancel 1 month prior to travel? Would they somehow claw back those 15k MQMs? Love your site. Keep up the great work. Aloha. M

    • rene says:

@Matt S – I would not do that and yes they may claw the points back. Why not just buy $5000 worth of Visa Debit Gift Cards and spend then next year on whatever? BTW, at this late date, any spend could post as a 2018 charge at this point. The 27th or 28th may be AOK but depending on what you buy it could not POST until next year then counts on next year not this year.

  49. kerry macdonald says:

    Hey Rene,
Question on end of year spend. If you buy a refundable ticket for say months from now to hit the spend is there an issue doing that??

  50. kerry macdonald says:

    Oops I see your reply

  51. Kathy B says:

Hey Rene! I’m trying to understand the value of using a Bluebird account – had never heard of it before. If I understand correctly. I could use that account to pay for things like my property taxes and other normal charges you can’t pay with a credit card. So how does that help you earn points? You lost me there. Also, if I’m trying to pick out cards to apply for (I’ve only held Delta Reserve for years, no others), are there certain cards to get for grocery spend, some to charge your cell phone on, etc.? Another for travel? Is there any kind of list that helps figure that out to get the most value? Thanks (again) from this newbie. This is all very interesting to think through.

    • rene says:

@Kathy B – Bluebird is all but dead. Time to move on.

As for paying taxes it has a fee but maybe worth it to meet spend goals.

As for others, yes. May cards offer 5x for cell or cable like Ink cards.

  52. FlyerBeek says:

Rene, any further updates from your sources regarding SGCs no longer qualifying as MQD-waiver spend for DL AMEX cards? I’m beginning to think this is not simply a glitch, and it hasn’t really been noticed/reported by many. Another blow to the value of DL AMEX cards (especially considering the recent $250k spend requirement for Diamond MQD-waiver).

  53. Melvin says:

    Rene,
I have made purchases over the last few years of personal and business AMEX GC on my Platinum DL AMEX with the charges applying to my MQD waiver. I have made 2 such purchases in early January 2018 and neither have applied to the MQD waiver (delta.com is showing all my other purchases up to Feb 3, 2018 in the MQD waiver tally). I don’t think it’s a glitch. I think AMEX has caught on. What do you think?

  54. ian says:

@Rene I have a Delta AmEx companion ticket and I also have an unused full value e-ticket that was applied to my account from the hurricane last year when I had to cancel my trip. Since the eTicket isn’t a voucher or credit, it’s technically an unused ticket, can this be use as the form of payment for my flight when using the companion pass?

    Thanks!

    • rene says:

@ian – Sorry no. You must pay with an Amex card. Any Amex card. Anyones Amex card.

  55. KathyB says:

Rene: I’ve read a lot about how valuable the Chase cards are, but since the points can’t be used for Delta, they don’t seem as attractive to me. I’m really just starting and have had Delta Reserve forever. Just got SPG AmEx and Citi Expedia MC. Not sure if I should get a Chase card or if there’s a better strategy? I can always use Chase for hotel stays, but trying to also get a bunch of Delta points for international (D1) travel. Appreciate your thoughts!

    • rene says:

@KathyB – Chase Ultimate Rewards® points are still valuable and you can use them to book Delta flights just like cash. You can NOT send them to Delta like you can with Amex Membership Rewards points. SPG Amex you can also send to Delta and if you send 20k you get 25k at the other end. You can use Citi Expedia points also to book Delta flights but again NOT send to Delta. Each has it’s own use and perks and benefits. Does this help?

  56. KathyB says:

@Rene – yes, thanks that does help. So if you book Delta flights using Chase points or Citi Expedia points, do you earn MQMs or are they treated like Award travel and don’t earn miles?

    • rene says:

@KathyB – You earn just like paying “cash” if you will. Chase UR or Citi TY or Expedia points are NOT award travel as far as Delta is concerned.

    Good morning Rene!
Have you ever know the Amex Gold Business card to offer MQMs? I have been watching for sometime, and it seems like the offers only include standard miles as a bonus.
    Thanks!

RENE’ – I was auto enrolled in the Reserve Card for the extra bonus MQM and skymiles spend requirement but did not receive the auto enroll for the Delta Platinum Sky miles card i have as well. Called AMEX as instructed and gave code with explanation but representative indicated they were not able to use the code to manual enroll as it was an auto enroll only. Thoughts on this? Would like to have both cards and receive the additonal bonus / MQM after after 3rd spend requirement. Thanks in advance for your response

Rene – I’m trying to get Delta to add this 3rd Tier Bonus to my Delta Reserve Card and its a mess. They keep telling me that I can only get it if they offer it to me in an email. I’m already unhappy with the Reserve Card over the $250,000 spend requirement. They aren’t making my life any easier. Any thoughts?

    Rene,

Question about the Amex Platinum (non-Delta, non-Business). I have the $550/year card and my wife and kids have the three additional cards (for $175 extra for the three).

    1) Can EACH of the three additional cardholders get the $100 GOES rebate/refund (total of $300 refunded) every four years or is this benefit limited to the primary cardholder?

    2) Can EACH of the three additional cardholders get entry on their own into the Delta SkyClub, Centurion and/or Priority Pass lounges?

    Many thanks in advance

    • rene says:

@JP Q1) primary + AUs 1x every 5 years. Q2) All get same day travel Sky Club (no guess) as well as Centurion (and 2 guests).

I’m trying to reconcile the spending that DL.com says I’ve reached so far this year ($68-69K as of 6/23/18 shown on delta.com/acctactvty/myskymiles.action) with the actual spending I’ve done across 2 DL Amex cards per Amex as of the same date ($105K). To your knowledge, is DL deducting cash-like activity or mall purchases to calculate my spend? Does DL combine my personal & biz cc spending in their calc? (Both personal & biz cards have same Skymiles #). U understand why I don’t want to bring it to either parties’ attention. I’ve earned miles & MQMs on all spending, but it doesn’t appear that I do toward the annual $250K spend waiver for status. What could I be missing? Ever had this prob?

    • rene says:

@Rick – All is working as in years past. Yes all personal and biz spend combines into one as long as not 2 of the EXACT same card (example 2 biz plat delta not AOK).

    Hi Rene

I’m ready for CSR, but I’ve been reading a few conflicting reports on them. I value your input and happy to follow a link to sign on.
I am under 5/24 by more than 30 days.
I have a CSP, but it is over 2 years old.

I think I read that I can’t have both CSP and get a CSR, and I doubt I would get the sign up bonus if I upgrade my card.
I just spent all but 300 or so UR, so I am not too concerned about losing them, but I am wondering if I should downgrade my CSP to something I can keep UR with. Or if it is “safer” I could just cancel it.
My other question is if I should wait a certain amount of time between getting rid of the CSP before applying for the CSR?
    Thanks!

  63. RossKoh says:

    Thanks René
Will do as soon as I pay it off.

Am I right that in cancelling the card I will lose any extended warranty on prior purchases?

  64. RossKoh says:

    Downgrade to Chase Freedom successful.
Waited for the card to arrive before applying for the Reserve (they stated my preferred card would still work until the new one arrived & was activated)

I followed your links to sign up for the Reserve, but unfortunately got the message that they needed more time & I would hear back via mail within 30 days. Fingers crossed.

  65. RossKoh says:

    Under Chase you have

“(888) 245-0625 – Personal Reconsideration Line with a live rep”

That number now says it is out of service and you should call the number on the back of your card.
    The alternate number still works.

    Thanks for everything René!

Noob tip: Don’t apply for a card when you have a security freeze in place!

  66. Kayla says:

Hi! thank you so much for all your insightful information. I have reached the 25,000 waiver and reached Gold with my mqms. I would like to at least get platinum because of choice benefits and because I have the waiver.
I have the gold and platinum amex cards from delta with my combined spending on both got the 25,000 but do you know if and how or who to call to see if I could get the bonus 10,000 mqms miles boost?
I thought it was combined from 2 credit cards but now its showing me it needs to be 25,000 on one. I would of only used 1 if I knew that!
do I call delta to attempt or amex or not even bother?

    Thanks so much.
p.s. I won your GoGo inflight 25x card from swag Saturday while back and its the best thing so thanks again!

    • rene says:

@Kayla – To get the 10k mqm boost you must spend by 31dec $25,0000 on the delta platinum card. Calling will not help.

  67. Rick says:

Both my SO & I have had separate AX DL Reserve accts for a few years. This year, after I hit Plat spend threshold, we concentrated our spending on his cards, & he will hit Diamond by year end. We usually travel together, & I get upgraded on his coattails if we’re in the same reservation. Any reason for me to keep my Reserve acct? Going forward, we’ll concentrate spending on his Reserve & Plat Biz, so I wonder if there’s a hidden benefit to my forking over another $450 AF this year.

    • rene says:

@Rick – Only if you want free SkyClub access but if you have non-Delta Amex Platinum card then no (under your situation that is). Unless you want to keep getting the BOGO cert and to be able to send spend MQMs each year.

  68. Chriss says:

    Rene,
Thanks again for all you do for us travelers!
I already have Delta Platinum and Delta reserve and max them for MQM every year. A new development has required an AMEX Business Platinum added to our company for a monthly large purchase. In other words… I already have almost all the Delta advantage I can get (I am DM now).
Do you think I should choose an alternate airline (i.e. Alaska) for my designated airlines since I almost never get incidentals from Delta? Most of the time I would use a Delta card for booking Delta anyway, not this card. Thanks!
