The Best Holiday Inn Express I Have Ever Visited (Seriously – Check This Place Out!)

The image shows a Holiday Inn Express & Suites building located next to a river. The hotel has a modern design with stone and brick elements. A paved walkway runs alongside the river, bordered by a metal fence and grassy areas. The sky is clear and blue, suggesting a sunny day.

When I think of a Holiday Inn Express, I think of something cookie-cutter near an airport that you stay in because it is cheap, and all you are doing is mostly sleeping before a cruise or a flight. It is not something to be impressed with – but this one in Rock Falls, Illinois, is.

A riverside walkway with a paved path runs alongside a body of water. There are benches and lampposts along the path. A bridge spans the river in the background, and there are buildings and trees visible on the opposite bank. The sky is cloudy with patches of blue.

First up, as you can see, it is built right on the river and has stunning river views (more on that in a bit). Plus, it seems like it is either the best-maintained Holiday Inn Express I have ever stayed at or it is brand spanking new.

The image shows a promotional listing for the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Rock Falls. On the left, there is a photo of the hotel exterior with a modern design featuring stone accents and a covered entrance. On the right, details about the hotel are provided, including the address (301 East 2nd Street, Rock Falls, Illinois), contact number, and a rating of 4.5 stars from 1052 reviews. Amenities listed include pets allowed, EV charging, parking included, free breakfast, an indoor pool, and a health/fitness center. The hotel is 0.31 miles from the city center. A "Member Sale" is mentioned, with prices starting at 161 USD per night, and a "Select Hotel" button is visible.

I was in town for the weekend for a golf outing with a buddy so we picked a room with two queen beds. The only thing was the reservation was on two different stays because I had two free night certs from my Chase IHG cards (one in my name, one in my wife’s name) and for the yearly ~$50 fee I got great value compared to booking direct. (I’m talking about the old IHG Select card. The next-best-thing is the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card*.) The hotel staff was super accommodating and not only let us stay in the same room both nights but coded the keys so we did not have to come back and re-code them in the morning (never had that happen before).

A hotel room with two neatly made double beds featuring white linens. A wooden headboard with two wall-mounted lamps is above the beds. A nightstand between the beds holds a telephone, a clock, and a small sign. A window with green curtains is on the right, and a closed door is visible in the background. The room has a modern and clean appearance.

A hotel room with a bed partially visible on the right. A wooden desk with a chair and a lamp is on the left, with a mirror above it reflecting part of the bed and bedside lamps. A flat-screen TV is mounted on the wall above a wooden dresser. There is a small bench with a backpack and a suitcase next to it. The entrance door is visible in the background.

The beds were reasonably soft (I like a really soft bed, FYI – my buddy said they WERE soft) and everything in the room worked as expected and the room was very clean including the carpets. And the room came with a big perk:

A cozy hotel room corner featuring a neatly made bed with white linens and pillows on the left. Next to the bed is a patterned armchair under a modern lamp with a white shade. A green curtain partially covers a window, through which an outdoor patio with a table and chair is visible. Below the window is an air conditioning unit, and a "No Smoking, No Vaping" sign is on the window.

A small balcony with two gray chairs and a white square table. The balcony has a metal railing on one side and a large window on the other. The floor is made of light-colored wood planks.

A calm river reflecting the sky and surrounding greenery. In the background, there are trees and a few buildings, including a structure with a tall chimney. The sky is partly cloudy, and the scene is viewed through a mesh screen.

We had a balcony that overlooked the river, so when I got up well before my buddy, who was blissfully snoring away at 6 AM, I could sit and take in eagles crying while fishing, as well as ducks, all types of seagulls, and even what I think was a mink hunting along the shoreline. Plus tons of fish jumping and splashing as the water flowed by. What an absolute treat and such a nice way to wake up.

The image shows a modern bathroom with a large mirror above a white countertop sink. There are toiletries and neatly folded towels on the counter. Below the sink, more towels are hanging on a rack. The wall has a geometric pattern, and a shower with a curtain is visible in the background. The floor is tiled, and a toilet is partially visible to the right.

The image shows a small kitchenette area in a hotel room. It includes a black mini-fridge at the bottom, a countertop with a coffee maker and coffee pods, and a microwave on a wooden shelf above. There are wooden cabinets above the microwave. Part of a bed with white bedding is visible in the adjacent room. The walls are a combination of beige and blue.

The room had all the things you would expect and the bathroom was clean, The fridge was whisper quite and had a small ice box to freeze my ice bricks to keep drinks cold in my golf bag for the next day. Just perfect.

The image shows a hotel room with a television mounted on the wall. The TV is displaying a golf event, with a golfer preparing to putt on a green, surrounded by a crowd of spectators. Below the TV, there is a wooden desk with various items, including a cup with a straw, a remote control, and some electronic devices. To the left, there is a mirror reflecting part of the room, including a lamp and green curtains.

We asked the front desk for dinner choices around the area and they recommend a brew pub only minutes away and we had an enjoyable time watching golf on the big screens and then again in our room before drifting off. So a bit more about the hotel:

The image shows a row of three white front-loading washing machines in a laundry room. Two of the machines have their doors open, revealing the drum inside. The machines are placed on a tiled floor, and there are patterned curtains on the left side of the image.

The image shows a door with a window, leading to a fitness center. Through the window, a rack of dumbbells is visible inside the room. There is a sign on the door that reads "Fitness Center" and mentions it is open 24 hours, with a note that children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Another sign says "Use at your own risk."

Compact workout room with well-equipped toys? Check! A number of laundry machines if you need? Check!

The image shows an indoor swimming pool area with a small rectangular pool. The pool is surrounded by a tiled floor and has metal handrails for entry. There are several chairs and tables along the wall, and a pool lift is visible on the right side. Signs on the wall include pool rules and a warning about no lifeguard on duty. A life preserver is mounted on the wall, and there is an exit sign above a door in the background.

The image shows an indoor swimming pool area with clear water and metal handrails leading into the pool. There are several lounge chairs and tables along the side, with large windows providing a view of parked cars and buildings outside. The walls are tiled, and there is a clock and a shelf with towels on the right side. The pool depth is marked as 3 feet.

A compact but decent pool if you happen to be visiting with the kiddos? Yup! Sadly no hot tub as my friend was wanting to soak before the next days tournament. Ah well.

The image shows a breakfast buffet setup. On the left, there is a juice dispenser labeled "Squeeze the Day" with options for cranberry juice, apple juice, orange juice, and water. To the right, there are several covered chafing dishes labeled with food options such as biscuits, sausage gravy, and turkey sausage. Above the buffet, there are signs indicating "Hot Food" and other breakfast-related themes. In the background, there are cereal dispensers and a container labeled "Quaker Oatmeal."

The image shows a bakery counter with a geometric patterned wall in the background. On the counter, there is a display case with various pastries, a toaster, napkins, and utensils. There are also condiment bottles and a sign indicating "Cinnamon Sweet Roll." The area is labeled "Bakery" with a sign above.

Breakfast was what you expect at a Holiday Inn Express but the attendant was very observant and everything was kept hot and well stocked. For a free breakfast (well included with room rate) it was just fine. Plus the views again at breakfast:

The image shows the interior of a restaurant or cafe with tables and chairs arranged near large windows. Outside, there is a patio area with more tables and chairs, shaded by blue umbrellas. The windows offer a view of a body of water and a distant shoreline with trees and buildings. The interior has a modern design with a mix of seating options and decorative elements.

The image shows an outdoor patio area overlooking a body of water. There are several tables and chairs with blue umbrellas providing shade. A metal railing separates the patio from the water, and a "No Smoking No Vaping" sign is visible on the railing. Trees and greenery are visible across the water, and the sky is clear.

Outdoor seating area by a waterfront, featuring several tables and chairs under large blue umbrellas. A metal railing separates the seating area from the water. In the background, there is a bridge and buildings along the opposite shore. A sign on the railing indicates "No Smoking, No Vaping."

You could sit out on the patio and enjoy the river views as you dined. Just not what you expect at a budget hotel right?

A table is set up outdoors on a grassy area, displaying multiple trophies of various sizes and designs. The background features a golf course with trees and a path. A speaker is placed on the ground in front of the table.

The image shows the exterior of a Holiday Inn Express hotel. The building has a modern design with a combination of stone and brick facade. There is a covered entrance with stone pillars, and a person is sitting on a bench near the entrance. Several cars are parked in the parking lot, and there are trees and landscaping around the area. The sky is partly cloudy.

I would never have considered taking the time to review a budget hotel that all look about the same but gosh this one was different and I have never stayed at one that offered so much and on the finer points (clean, service and so on) the hotel just hit it out of the park. I can see why it has a near 5 star rating on IHGs website as this is one to look to visit if you are ever in the Rock Falls area! – Rene

PS – If you are curious, my friend and I shot even par as a two-man team. We had tons of looks at birdies but could not make a putt to save our lives. The winners were -8 so…

Looks like a lovely property! The Upper Peninsula of Michigan has two incredible Holiday Inn Express properties that I have enjoyed staying at over the years. My all-time favorite is the Holiday Inn Express Munising-Lakeview. It sits high up overlooking Lake Superior, near the Pictured Rocks Lakeshore, and Hiawatha National Forest. The other is in St. Ignace, Michigan, right on Lake Michigan. Another HIX that I found unique was the Spanish Colonial one in the city center of Quito, Ecuador (it’s also a bargain!). Thanks for sharing this find, René.

I agree, great property. Not new or recently remodeled, but clean and accommodating. I stay in a lot of IHG properties and enjoyed our stay in Rock Falls as well.
