I have transited Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez/Mexico City International Airport (MEX) more times than I can remember because, in the past when I was still chasing Delta Diamond status, flying Delta partners in a cheap business class ticket was (and still is) one of the best ways to rack up a bunch of points or MQDs based on a percentage of how far you fly. Both Delta and AeroMexico use Terminal 2, so it is a quick and convenient connection point and you have an American Express Centurion Lounge to visit, as well.
I have also visited the above immigration hall an equal number of times, and since I was last there, they have revamped it again to allow Americans to use an automated clearing unit to quickly complete this process (in the past, they had Global Entry type units in the middle, and then you still had to visit with an officer—that is now gone).
But for this visit, I was overnighting at the Hilton inside Terminal 1 which also handles many other airlines, including SkyTeam partner Air France. After picking up our bags, we exited the secure side and turned right.
If we had been connecting the same day, and did not have luggage to check, we could have simply gone upstairs and taken the air train as you can see in this YouTube video. It would have been quick and simple but since we were departing the next day and had checked luggage we could not use this option.
We had two choices. One was call the Hilton for a pickup but I did not think about that beforehand so we took the free shuttle bus provided by the airport at the far end of the concourse.
Hefting up our large bags (see this post) for a 14 day cruise was a bit of an effort as well as hefting them up into the storage area. The bus, which is on the non-secure side, returns to the secure side and takes you for a ride through the airport, which is rather fun if you are an AVgeek like me.
For example, we passed the jet we came in on and enjoyed seeing a bunch of AeroMexico jets along the route.
I will say this ride, while fun to see jets, is less than ideal. The buses are warm, and the ride is not the most comfortable. The plus side is that you are avoiding any possible traffic mess by cutting through the airport itself.
Once the bus exits the secure side you are deposited at door 7 at Terminal 1.
Just ahead of you is an escalator ramp to take you up to the main hall.
From here, you simply turn right and walk past several food vendors on your way to check in. You will also pass the non-secure Amex Centurion Terminal 1, which I will review soon.
Do keep in mind that check-in generally does not open up until about 3 hours before your flight. This was not an issue for us as we were overnight at the Hilton that I will also review soon as well.
Bottom line: the bus transfer works fine but I would rather take the air train had we been able to do so. – René
