Here’s some bad news for the “Don’t travel to Maui!” pearl-clutchers.
On Saturday night, Maui homeowner Steven Tyler told an Aerosmith concert crowd:
People, when you think of Maui, what do you think? Love?
And you can’t wait for your ass to go there, right?…
It’s still there, it’s a place to go do the, y’know, the love thing.
It’s still open, it’s still happening, everything is beautiful. Except you gotta come there to make it more beautiful.
He also spoke some Hawaiʻian words printed on a script left on the “Dream On” singer’s piano.
Not all of Maui was ravaged by the awful wildfires. Only certain a certain part was affected. The north and eastern side of the island — where there are several resorts — escaped the flames.
Hawaiʻi says it’s OK for us to visit parts of Maui right now.
Hawaiʻi Governor Josh Green continued to emphasize the need to avoid West Maui at this time, as well as the importance of travel to the rest of Maui and the other Hawaiian Islands and the economic impact it has on the well-being of Maui and its recovery. In alignment with Governor Green, the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority urges visitors to refrain from going to West Maui, as a means of respect for the people and places that have been lost in Lahaina during this devastating tragedy.
Maui’s economy relies on tourism.
Maui may now be a bittersweet place to visit. I’ve heard and read that many children are among those who haven’t yet been identified — living or dead. (I’ve also heard other theories that are quite disturbing but not fit to print here.)
But Maui is bigger than some realize. Now that we’ve gotten the “official” OK to visit the island again, when will you travel to Maui?
