A Delta Air Lines flight from Milan, Italy, to New York-Kennedy diverted to Rome on Monday after it was pelted with hail shortly after takeoff.
Delta flight DL185 departed Malpensa Int’l (MXP) at 12:29 PM local time — but then encountered a hail storm.
The 767-300 (tail number 189DN) diverted to Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Int’l-Fiumicino Int’l (FCO), about an hour to the southeast. A Delta spokesperson told us there were three pilots, eight flight attendants, and 215 passengers on board.

Holy hail! That plane willl be in the shop for a few days. Most importantly, it appears no one was injured.
“Delta flight 185 from Milan to New York-JFK diverted to Rome after experiencing an apparent weather-related maintenance issue shortly after departure,” the Delta spokesperson said. “The flight landed safely in Rome where passengers deplaned normally and where maintenance personnel is conducting a thorough evaluation of the aircraft. Delta apologizes for the delay to our customers’ journey. The safety of our customers and crew is Delta’s top priority…Customers are being reaccommodated on alternate flights to reach their final destinations.”
