Well. That didn’t take long.
Barely 72 hours after the CDC’s mask mandate was ruled unlawful and the Biden Administration (temporarily) backed down on its efforts to keep people masked while traveling, Los Angeles County basically said, “Not so fast.”
The county issued a new order Thursday afternoon affecting certain shared transportation vehicles and hubs — including airports such as Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Hollywood-Burbank (BUR).
So, if you plan to fly in one of those airports, you might want to keep a mask handy. (Even the State of California gave up on mask mandates for transit.)
“Public Health is issuing Health Officer Order to note that masking in all public transit within LA County and in LA County indoor transportation hubs continues to be required,” the statement reads.
“Per the revised Order, masking continues to be required to be worn by everyone, 2 years of age and older, regardless of their COVID-19 vaccination status, on public transit within the County. This includes wearing masks on commuter trains, subways, buses, taxis, and ride-shares. Masking continues to be also required in indoor transportation hubs including airport and bus terminals, train and subway stations, seaport or other indoor port terminals, or any other indoor area that serves as a transportation hub.”
Notice that airplanes aren’t expressly mentioned. So, I guess once you board a plane, you can take off your mask if you wish?
But as KTLA News’ Sareen Habeshian points out, “LAX…announced (this week) it would no longer be enforcing the use of masks, and neither will several major airlines. L.A. Metro, LADOT, DASH buses, Amtrak, Metrolink…all said they, too, would drop the mandate earlier this week.”
Daily new COVID cases and deaths in LA County have doubled since last weekend. (When masks were still mandated.)
So, perhaps we’ll see a showdown between the airports, bus stations, and the county. Stay tuned, folks.

Leave it to California to ruin a good thing.
Toothpaste doesn’t go back in the tube.
Well here’s a pro-traveler tip. Just don’t wear the mask. In the 100 or so times I’ve flown during the last two years, I have not once worn a mask walking through any terminal or airport. Not once. Only wore it going through security, entering a lounge, or boarding the plane. But then again, I haven’t had to deal with the mask crazies in California as I don’t fly though those airports. But I flew out of Philadelphia on Thursday when the city still had a mask mandate in place and only about 30% of people were masking in the airport. It’s over. People are done. Good luck trying to make this cat walk backwards. Don’t comply. Simple as that.
nuts calif is crazy…they di nit get it!!
crazy nanny state calif…but you can rob a bank and shop lift and not get arrested!!!
How is a city able to overrule the Federal government?
The federal court’s beef was with the CDC’s overreach, I believe. Counties (in this instance) can implement their own mandates.
At LGA today where they are also mandatory, everyone was doing what they wanted and nobody seemed to care either way.
