Hawaii’s COVID domestic travel rules officially said “aloha” (as in “good-bye”) early this morning.
The state required arriving travelers to be:
- fully vaccinated against COVID-19, or
- furnish a negative result from a COVID-19 test taken within 72 of their flight departing for the islands
- quarantined for five days
The tests had to be administered at a Hawaii Safe Travels partner. And those tests were expensive. (Man, what a great hustle Hawaii had going. I’m in the wrong business.)
As of Friday at 11:59 PM Hawaii Standard Time, though, those rules expired.
However, the state notes that travelers “arriving in Hawai‘i directly from international airports must still comply with U.S. federal requirements; consult with your airline.”
The Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association says (via Hawaii News Now) that hotels are seeing about 80% occupancy but “still not at pre-pandemic levels because of the absence of Japanese tourists.”
That said, this is great news for Hawaii and tourists. I hope we can find some good Hawaii mileage runs!

It’s nice to see the Covid political theater going away.
Never based in science, it was based on politicians needing to ‘do something’
Those something’s they did , obviously, had no impact on trajectory of virus, cases, or deaths.
Masks, vaccines, lockdowns – all did more harm than good.
And it so funny that everyone on that side used ‘science’ as political cover for insane rules.
Covid freak out will go down as the saddest years of modern history. Never have so few, harmed so many, simply to get re-elected.
And the people loved it. Loved the abuse.
Thank God! Too bad the flights are through the roof right now. Hopefully Space A will re-open for military flights?
