When I upgraded my eight-year-old laptop to something current, I found myself staring at a bunch of USB-C ports on my new machine. (Here’s how I saved a few hundred dollars — and months — buying my new MacBook Pro and accessories.)

Gone were the dedicated power port, Ethernet port (read: Internet cord plug-in), video out/Thunderbolt port (so I can use an external monitor), SD card reader, and USB 3 ports.

So how the heck was I supposed to plug in everything and still use all the gear I had before?

My friend Rick recommended this Anker 8-in-1 USB-C hub — and it’s been amazing.

Here’s why:

USB-C Data Port

Many USB hubs don’t have a USB-C data port. (Because many devices are going to USB-C, you’ll soon grow to appreciate this feature.)

While most have Power Delivery (PD) ports, it’s still nice to have a USB-C data input. That’s where this unit comes in handy. I usually charge and backup my iPad with this port.

Two USB-A (“Standard”) Ports

The Anker 8-in-1 USB-C hub has two USB 3.1 ports (which work fine with previous “versions” of USB). I use one to connect a My Passport hard drive for Time Machine backups. I generally keep the other port free or connect my iPad when I need to charge both my tablet and phone at the same time.

HDMI Port

The HDMI port works great and connects to my HP external monitor. It’s capable of delivering 4K resolution at 60Hz. (That’s good.)

Ethernet Port

Our Orbi router sits in my office. So I prefer to simply use an Ethernet cord to connect my laptop directly into the router. The only problem I’ve had with the hub is with the Ethernet cable coming slightly disconnected — but think that’s more a problem with the cable (or user 😉 ) than the hub.

100W Power Delivery

My new MacBook Pro sucks up a decent amount of power. So the 100W power capability is a must.

Price Point

The Anker 8-in-1 USB-C hub currently costs $49.99 on Amazon. (And there’s a 10% instant savings coupon that pops from time to time). I’ve purchased several Anker products during the past few years — and they all work great. So I had no problem dropping almost $50 for this device which has everything I need.

There certainly are cheaper USB-C hubs — but most don’t include everything the Anker has. For example, this ikling device has most of the same ports as the Anker. In fact, it also has a headphone jack and VGA port. But it doesn’t have a USB-C data port. QGeeM makes pretty good stuff. And this hub is a great deal — if you don’t mind not having an Ethernet port.

Final Approach

If you’re in the market for a new USB hub — or know someone who is — I highly recommend the Anker 8-in-1. It’s been a godsend and works great for me.

Obviously, your needs may differ from mine. But if they’re similar, check out the Anker hub!
