Air traffic at Van Nuys Airport — one of the world’s busiest and most famous general aviation airports — was impacted by traffic of another kind on Friday morning: a police pursuit.
The incident began just before 9:00 AM PST when a suspect somehow got onto the airport’s usually secure grounds.
The driver waved both hands out the sunroof and window while leading VNY airport police across taxiways and runways — including the famous 16R.
Legendary aerial journalist Stu Mundel was above the action in N29HD and broadcast the chase live on Fox 11 Los Angeles:
From glancing at FlightAware, it appears Sunset Aviation flight 711 from Oakland was affected and had to circle for a while. And a Cessna Skylane with tail number N619MW departed Long Beach (LGB) with an original destination of Van Nuys. But it apparently was diverted to nearby Whiteman (WHP) where it cooled its heels for about a half-hour before hopping over to VNY.
Later in the morning, Van Nuys Airport issued this statement on Twitter:
