Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot mandated late Thursday that travelers arriving from nearly a third of the US’ 50 states must quarantine for two weeks upon arrival into the Windy City.
Her Honor said, “We’ll be determining which states are covered by the order by looking at the latest public health data—particularly whether a state has a case rate growth of 15 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents per day.”
The order is effective Monday. It includes both out-of-state travelers and Chicagoans arriving from offending states.
“The order only applies to those who spent over 24 hours in a designated state,” she wrote. “It also only applies to people inside Chicago—it does not apply to other areas of Illinois.”
The initial list of said states are:
- Alabama
- Arkansas
- Arizona
- California
- Florida
- Georgia
- Idaho
- Louisiana
- Mississippi
- North Carolina
- Nevada
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Texas
- Utah
The affected states will be evaluated and amended each Tuesday.
We’ve seen governors issue quarantine orders for travelers. But I believe Mayor Lightfoot is the first city leader to issue such an order.
I appreciate Her Honor is giving people time to return to Chicago. But if she’s that serious and worried about it, I’m surprised the mayor is giving people almost four days to comply.

This will do little to nothing from a public health perspective, so likely just a political move. It’s a shame she’s failed to address the outrageous homicide rate in the city, with 28 murders in a 24 hour period during a recent weekend.
Jeff, thank you for your comment.
I am so sick of the hypocrisy and now the politicization of this pandemic. And they wonder why people are done with following orders from “authorities” like this dim-bulb mayor.
Hey Mayor, why don’t you figure out a way to keep 80 people from being shot every single weekend in your horrible city.
