Days after Delta announced flight suspensions to nearly a dozen airports, the US Department of Transportation said today that airlines can temporarily stop flights to 5% of destinations.
The CARES Act originally stipulated that airlines receiving relief money could not completely suspend service to any of their airports.
But today’s order “will allow carriers to reduce their service obligations, thereby reducing carriers’ financial burden and providing flexibility to manage operations and staffing across their networks. Meanwhile, the Department will ensure that, in granting the adjustments described here, all points previously covered under the service obligations retain access to the national air transportation system.”
However, each airport will still receive air service from an airline. So it sounds as though, say, United and American suspend flights from your hometown airport, Delta would be there to pick up the slack.
Airlines have until next Monday to submit their lists of proposed suspensions — ranked in order of preference.
