Southwest Airlines announced today it will slash a total of 1500 flights from its schedule of 4000 daily operations.
That’s a reduction of about 38%.
The airline said in a statement the changes are effective this Friday, March 27. The cuts will remain until a revised schedule goes into place on Tuesday, April 14.
Southwest is also suspending all food and beverage service as of tomorrow, March 25. Canned water — the only beverage Southwest has served for about the past week — will still be available upon request.
Final Approach
More depressing news for the travel industry. Sure, it stinks we can’t — or least shouldn’t — travel right now. But that’s, I think, mostly a mere inconvenience. The big picture is employees losing income for sustained periods of time.
I live under an approach pattern for one airport and departure route for another. One of the airports was constantly busy with Southwest flights. But now I rarely see a WN bird. I look forward to seeing more of their planes (and everyone else’s!) back in the sky — much sooner than later.
