Delta Air Lines announced today it’s reducing capacity by a huge 40% in the coming months and grounding 300 aircraft.
In an email sent to Delta employees and published online, CEO Ed Bastian said the airline is “currently seeing more cancellations than new bookings over the next month.” (Bold mine.)
He outlined a number of steps the airline is taking, including:
- Reducing capacity by 40% in the next few months. This is the largest capacity reduction in the airline’s history — including post 9/11.
- Eliminating flights to continental Europe for at least the next 30 days. (Service to London will continue).
- Parking up to 300 aircraft as our reduced capacity requires a substantially smaller fleet.
- Deferring new aircraft deliveries
I’m guessing we’ll see a major Schedule Change Saturday tomorrow.
