As the new year dawns tomorrow and we again make the choice of what Delta elite level we want to go for (or to simply give up and go free agent), I thought I would wax nostalgic over what we have lost this year and in the recent past.
During my year-end mileage run to Brussels this past weekend, I got to spend some time in the newly refurbished JFK Sky Club. Oh my, have they done an impressive job updating the main food and bar area (I will update my review of the club soon).
There was so much hype about this concept and Delta really “splashed it up” if you will. Depending on your point of view it may have even been a good value in burning Sky Miles with all the recent devaluations driving a SkyMile near SkyPenny in value.
Alas, it seems not only are the spas gone from the Sky Clubs but the entire Asanda brand and spas anywhere are now done for (They have not tweeted since 2017). Ah well.
Chris the other day had a hysterical post that made me grin from ear to ear about his 2-year-old daughter having to now pay for Sky Club access. It makes me really miss the days you could buy a day pass to the Sky Club and visit all you wanted along your trip.
Another thing I really miss is the Westin gray blanket in domestic Delta first class. The old ones were soft, warm, and cuddly sweet. The new, Delta-branded ones are harsh and scratch and just…yuck. I am not sure if these are the ones Delta is bragging up will be made partially from plastic bottles but, to me, they feel like they are and they are bad.
I know this is really is something minor but I still miss it that is having my million miler imprinted on it. Yes, I know they are sending out cheap plastic MM tags that we can show off as well but it is just not the same thing. Plus, one day, when I give up chasing status with Delta it would be nice to have 1MM on my Silver Medallion tags (may have to find some on eBay I guess).
Lastly I will really miss the bonus SkyMiles from spending on my Delta Reserve card(s). Getting 15k+15k SkyMiles as well as 15k+15k MQMs each year has been sweet and has just about offset the fee to earn these bonus MQMs. At least I have one more shot at this in January before it is gone.
I am sure I have missed a few things Delta has enhanced away over the past year or so. If so, what else will you miss in 2020? – René
