We bag on Delta IT fairly often. But Spirit Airlines today apparently gave the mothership the proverbial “Hold my beer!” challenge.
USA Today reports some Spirit passengers received emails informing them of hours-long delays — even for flights running on time.
Danielle McGee’s last-minute trip to surprise her family really did turn into a surprise — but not a good one.
She tweeted that while in an Uber she received an email reading that her 9:10 AM flight was rescheduled to 3:00 PM. Ms. McGee told the Uber driver to turn around and take her home.
But at 9 AM, a Spirit gate agent called Ms. McGree and asked if they should still expect her — because the flight was boarding.
Other passengers took to Twitter to harangue the budget airline:
when @SpiritAirlines completely changes your flight time from 10am to 3pm the day before your departure and you have to completely rearrange your entire travel day 🙂 #rage

Uh oh, @SpiritAirlines is changing flights without consent the day before a family vacation with many plans disrupted.
I mean, I don’t expect fancy seats or free soda, but an extra grand in travel expenses once we land to change our plans?
I fly Spirit a lot. Maybe not anymore.

When @SpiritAirlines changes your flight times with no notification & you try to call customer service and just keep getting a busy signal – this is why you don’t fly this airline!

For its part, Spirit said, “A system error is affecting check in for some flights. If you are having trouble, please try again shortly. Also, if you received a communication stating that your flight time has changed or has been canceled, please confirm your FLIGHT STATUS” on their website.

Chris,
Was there any update on what Spirit did to reaccommodate her?
@Eric Gunderson: I didn’t see anything publicly disclosed.
