This is a nice run with lots of possibilities. First you need some education. The above is an “UP Fare” (don’t know what that is? you need to read this post). It is good with Delta and Aeromexico. You can book a number of ways and the points you earn will depend on where and how you book. You can book:
- Direct on Delta.com
- Direct on Aeromexico.com
- Via OTA sites to either airline
- Via Amex Travel to spend points buying the ticket
If you look at the above screen shots you will see a number of important bits. You can book all AeroMexico flights via Delta.com but you will earn like you are flying Delta jets because it is a code-share (you earn on the marketed carrier not the metal you fly). If you do book on Delta.com (and you can see this is a coach fare basis i.e. a Y-Up fare) you only earn MQDs based on the real price of the ticket (minus taxes and fees). But if you book on AeroMexico you earn via the partner charts even if there are a few Delta metal flights mixed in. Lastly, you can start at TopCashBack and go to say JustFly.com and get $16 cash back booking that way. Many choices for those “in the know”.
Do keep in mind if you have not had the Delta Amex Reserve personal or business card you can pick that up and get 10,000 MQMs for the non-waived $450 first year fee (plus you get into the Sky Clubs for a year free when you fly Delta)!
Here are the lowest numbers I can find:
Cost in first class: $671
7455 MQMs at 9 CPM
If this is too crazy to try to book to get the best route (you can book a few other airports for close to the same numbers) please reach out to my friend Adam to help you book this!

Since JustFly doesn’t show the fare class booked in, would it be worth it to use a different OTA?
@Nick – They have worked perfect for me in every past run. If want to be 100% safe use AeroMexico site.
On AM that would be about 1100 MQDs?
@Anna – In my example above, if booked on AM site (or via OTA to AM site), almost $2000 in MQD credit!
