I have to tell you I had such a total blast on my visit to Charleston in August. The BBQ was amazing as well as the harbor tour and clearly the highlight was the total eclipse.
What was not amazing was the hard seating in the Delta gate area in CHS. So, like I always do when I have extra time in an airport, I went exploring to try to find the best spot to wait (since there were no lounges to enjoy). I found one!
In the central area between the two concourses there are a number of seats that will make an AVgeek like me uber happy.
Plus, as you can see, they are kinda hidden from the general public by a work desk / bench. But if you go around behind it you see:
Very comfy chairs with power nearby and runway views to die for (hey lady, get out of my seat)!
Now I am sure in Atlanta, Detroit or Minneapolis (or any other airport you like) you have a favorite little spot that offers something neat like a view or privacy or power or people watching or something special. Gate 1 in the Austin airport. It is near the end of the terminal downstairs. It is a rarely used gate with its own bathrooms and seating. I have never seen another passenger sitting there usually just staff.
You know I could tell you but I’d have to….well actually I can’t think of many secret spots. DFW does have some public lounge areas hidden near the skytrain escalators in a few spots. These are nice and not used that much.
MSP has the viewing deck that not many people go up to see (I assume this is still open).
My biggest tip when not in a lounge is that people are like cattle. You can be in a huge terminal with a couple flights leaving and the people will sit all crammed together at that gate. Many times I’ll just go to the next gate a few feet away and no one is there. I can still easily see the departure gate and have plenty of room to relax and spread out, use chargers, etc.
I also like the little tables along the terminal walk ways just before the gates at SLC but those are no secret.
DTW – if the pre-check lines are crazy, go to the attached Westin hotel & there is a non-pre-check security entrance from the end of the hotel lobby that usually has no line (and is usually open).
At MYR on the way to the B gates there are adirondack type beach chairs looking out to the runway.
A great place to plane watch.
ATL F Concourse, behind the elevators nearest the Sky Club are a few seats with great views of the ramp, and they tend to be very quiet and usually empty since there nowhere close to any of the gates.
The Delta Skyclub near gate 15 in Tokyo – NRT is super crowded and the KAL lounge is pretty bad. Two floors down from the Skyclub is a huge “public lounge”. It has plenty of seating, comfortable chairs, restrooms and when I was there was almost completely empty. The only disadvantage is no free food and drinks. Honestly, though, the Skyclub food wasn’t that great and the KAL food was just bags of chips and cups of water. Definitely my new favorite spot in NRT.
In Atlanta, the international terminal is usually pretty empty. There are seating areas where you can sit in peace and watch planes take off and land without a million other people around you and its a nicer area that isn’t currently under construction.
DTW, yes, under the train there are sections of seating that are smaller on the other side of stairs and small walls and those areas get overlooked a lot.
I also kinda like to find the dog relief areas. Not to watch them relieve themselves but its kinda fun seeing dogs walk around in the airport and seeing all the people doing double takes “oh there is a dog!”

Seattle: Sky Club for a meal then the Centurion for desert.
In San Diego check out the rental car center. Great art. Two sculptures one made from 801 Hyundai Elantra left tail lights the other from 2,000 Ford rear view mirrors. And kinetic sculpture outside the center.
Agree with Mark R’s DTW Westin TSA gambit. Used it many a time!
The Evansville (IN) airport rocking chairs are quaint and have a nice view of the occasional take off/landing events! (I’d have liked to post a pic here for everyone!)
The Skyclub @ MCO toward the back of the lounge. Tables & cubicles to get lost and get some work done. All the traffic is up front around the bar and the front bathrooms.
