Last year when I played around with the FREE Boingo service I got from my non-Delta Business AMEX Platinum card <–LINK (you get it with the personal card too btw) I was not all that impressed. However now that my wife has the add-on user card for Skyclub entrance and so much more I started to tinker with it again and wanted to see if she could get it as a perk as well.
It was simple to just type in her number and check for availability and instantly found about that,
yep, as an additional user she was indeed eligible for the service as well at no cost.
Sign-up was equally simple and now she has the service on her devices too. But is it better than before and a worthwhile perk? Especially when so many airports now offer free wifi service? I think so, and here is why.
As I mentioned in the title of the post, I had uninstalled the Boingo app on my phone. It just was not performing that well a year ago for me. Now, however, things are much different. I am getting quicker and more reliable connections around town i.e. at home in the South Bend area.
Another HUGE perk when in airports is much better connections and none of the “junk” for the free service. What junk? Sometimes there are ads you must watch before you can get online. Even worse, sometimes they want you to install some APP (NO, not gonna happen). Other times they want your cell number or email to get online (does not work so well outside the USA). And then, after all that, you get slower connection on the “free” service. Boingo often times will bypass ALL of this. There is the real value and saving paying ~$60/yr for the service.
So I have the app on my and my wife’s phones now and am really enjoying it this time around. I don’t know if they have upgraded the service but this really is one more bit of value we are now both gaining from our AMEX Platinum cards! – René

I have been enjoying the Boingo service at airports for a while now. Worked especially well overseas, too. Has anyone had experience with it in Manhattan, where they claim to “blanket” the entire city?
The Amex Boingo page says “up to 4 devices”. So unless you and your wife have more than 4 devices between the two of you, wouldn’t one login have been enough?
@M – Simple to each have since she has add on card.
Can I sign up for the card and get bonus miles since I’ve only ever been an add on user to my husbands delta plat Amex? If so, can I have the miles sent to him since I only ever use his miles for free tickets? That is, if they would even give it to me considering I’m retired now . . . And, thus, have no income.
@Christine – Again, this is the NON-Delta AMEX Platinum card. With the Membership Rewards points you can send those to your SkyMiles account if you wish 1:1.
I used it yesterday at the airport and it worked fine 🙂
