Delta today posted yet another change back toward the direction of the old rules, but only a little bit.
Apparently those paying for 1st class tickets in any 1st class fare class complained enough that a 1st class ticket should not have all the same SDC restrictions as a coach ticket. They were right.
There are some big gotchas as seems always to be the case nowadays with Delta. Notice those of us who get 1st class upgrades are NOT under the same rules; we are under the rules of our original purchase fare class so if we want to change there has to be space in our face class or lower as, uh, before 2.0, that is the current rules, uh, the rules after the 1st change, but before this change, that is not a change for us. Clear? Ugg – (all this inside 1 year btw).
So can we game this? Can we not go from say a single connect to a dual for more miles or can we say change the other way from say the JKF-ATL-LAX to the JFK-LAX and still be in 1st for 1/3 of the price? Delta is not saying, but I bet they come out with version 3.1 of the new, new, new SDC rule to stop that kind of thing from happening. Will be fun to see.
Don’t get me wrong, this is a step in the right direction, but you really need a pocket dictionary now to keep track of all the rules to fly Delta. Just wait for #Skymiles2015 to go into full force and wait to see what back peddling is needed then when those who spend the most are the most upset of any group of Delta flyers (and the rest will be plenty upset too) – René

It can be gamed, the more complicated it is, the less inclined most phone reps will be to go be the fully by the book (thinking about US Airways) and invoke “exceptions”, that is, if the system allows it.
Geeez someone as simple as SDC and DL has to make it harder than rocket science
So glad UA has a straightforward and liberal SDC policy that doesn’t keep flip flopping
Why I only book discounted first. Thx delta :). Best day ever.
@Chris – yes a good day for 1st flyers!
How does this work if the first segment is in First/Business and the second is in Economy? Can you change the first segment under the new rule and by default they would have to change the second segment even if your fare code isn’t availble?
@Matt – grt question. My guess is all will be under 1st rull but will reach out to DL to conf. txs Rene
Looks like changing into domestic BE from a connecting route in domestic first (your JFK-ATL-LAX / JFK-LAX example) is probably not permitted based on the “…in the same premium cabin” wording.
