[While the facts in the post are correct
this is meant to be a comedy post]
There is one group that is truly upset over the new Skymiles2015 changes and I feel your pain – the UBER rich. Why (Mr. Fancy pants AKA View From the Wing missed this little bit in his post)?
You see, as we can clearly test with the helpful Delta mileage calculator, when spending over $6819 for a ticket you will earn NO bonus Skymiles. I don’t know about you, but I often spend WAY more than that for my round trip tickets from SBN-DTW-SBN!
This is just WRONG. How can Delta tell us UBER rich they are going to reward us for giving them as much money as possible on any ticket and then NOT reward us with more and more miles we never spend anyway. Outrageous I tell you – outrageous.
But there is HOPE and a solution! Like all rich people (or those with fat expense accounts that can bill our company any amount of money and get it reimbursed works just fine too), we read the fine print over and over. Notice what Delta.com says in the FAQs page:
“Miles earned per segment will be calculated based on a prorated amount of the total ticket price eligible for mileage accrual and will not be subject to minimum mileage accrual. Each passenger will earn a maximum of 75,000 miles per reservation, inclusive of any Medallion mileage bonuses or class-of-service bonuses. Promotional mileage bonuses will not count toward the 75,000 maximum mileage accrual per person per reservation unless otherwise stated in the promotion’s terms and conditions.” – BOLD MINE
The key part is the bold part that is the PER RESERVATION. So, when we have tickets in the normal range of $10-12,000 dollars (pre tax clearly), then we just simply buy two one way tickets! This way we can now max out at $13,638 per round trip ride. Still a bit of a challenge I know (and I feel your pain) but one we can work with at least and not be so constrained as the new system outlines for us.
There may be times we clearly need to break this down even more. Like what? Say you are flying to South Africa. You may have to buy a One Way ticket to some point in Europe and then another One Way the rest of the way to Johannesburg. Then the same on the return. Now we are into a much more manageable price point of $27,276 for the trip. That is absolutely a number we can work with and would net out 300,000 Skymiles for just ONE ROUND TRIP! 🙂
Plus, the REALLY good news is we can still get 2x on the FULL TICKET PRICE, including taxes and fees, by paying with our Delta AMEX cards (or 3x if we use our American Express® Premier Rewards Gold card). To earn 400,000+ miles on one trip is what champagne & caviar dreams are made of! Now if you can get the boss to ok your wife to go along for the trip you are talking nearly 1 MILLION SKYMILES for the little swing around the horn of Africa to wrap up that latest deal for the company!
So UBER rich – please don’t give up hope, under #Skymiles2015 you can earn for every dollar you spend with Delta Air Lines and feel valued as you should be! – Rene

“To earn 400,000+ miles on one trip is what champagne & caviar dreams are made of!”
Delta does not serve caviar. And they do not let you redeem for first class on their partners, so no caviar there for you either. Sorry buddy!! 🙂
@Gary – DOHHHH… hummm… we could maybe bring the fish eggs but you have me on the 1st class seat 🙁
@Gary: Difference between REDEEMING and BUYING. Redeeming gets you no miles (non-revenue).
However, you can use a DL codeshare to book in F for say, AF (and they *do* have caviar) to CDG! And get the Delta miles (and Starwood points as well)!
A joke where you point that it is one, is unfunny almost by definition.
@Sheldon – I don’t think that is funny at all 😉
