Welcome to a weekly feature on the Eye of the Flyer blog. Each week this series covers in a “rookie” way either a Delta or travel related theme and attempts to break down to a basic level each topic. You can read up on all the previous posts HERE. Now on to this week’s feature.
I don’t have any little ones (but I do get to fly with them sometimes). I did start flying very early and my first passport was issued overseas by the US embassy. But back in the 60’s there were no frequent flyer programs to amass points with even as a youngster. What about today?
Can a 1 year old open a Skymiles account and also can a 1 year old earn Delta points for their trips with mom & dad? Let’s take a look at what Delta says about the T&C about joining Skymiles:
“Delta’s SkyMiles program is open to any person in any country that has not prohibited participation in frequent flyer programs.”
The simple answer is YES! If you are breathing human being you can get an account (I say this because your cello can not have an account). There are things to keep in mind when it comes to kids travel. If you look at the very detailed information on traveling with children, you will see that unless they have their own ticket they will not earn Skymiles. There are luggage exceptions, that is, an infant in arms on a 10% or 50% fare ticket can get extra, but not points. You need a seat & a “full” ticket!
One thing about infants in arms I did not know was that Delta does allow you to have 2 little ones per adult:
“Number of Infants per Adult: A limit of two infants, less than two years old, per adult may travel together.”
However, you are only allowed to have one in your lap at take off so the other will have be in a seat or approved car seat (I don’t think you would be allowed to have another passenger hold your little one 🙂 ).
“Takeoff and Landing: An adult (18 years or older) may hold an infant or place the infant in a FAA-approved child restraint during take off and landing. Booster-type car seats are not permitted for use during taxi, takeoff and landing.”
Plus, there is also the issue of oxygen masks thus you are limited to how many people can sit in an row at one time (just in case). Summer, who runs Mommy Points & I had a combo blog a while back about this topic and safely. If I did have a child, at any age, it would be safest in a seat/car seat. In severe turbulence there is no way to hold onto an infant!
This is a bit short for a rookie Wednesday post, but wanted to tie in the old ones and answer some reader questions about little ones earning points this way. – René
