Why Private Island Days Are the Hidden Gem of Any Cruise — And How to Make the Most of Them

One of the greatest joys of cruising is the ability to wake up in a brand-new destination every day — different ports, cities, and countries — all without unpacking more than once. Add in world-class amenities and a level of service that’s hard to match anywhere on land, and it’s easy to see why cruising has such a devoted following. But there’s one experience that consistently catches guests off guard in the best possible way: the private island day.

What Makes Private Islands So Special?

Cruise lines invest heavily in owning or leasing private islands and exclusive coastal territories — and it shows. These destinations are carefully chosen for their privileged locations, dream-worthy weather, and access to some of the most stunning beaches you’ll find anywhere in the world.

What sets them apart isn’t just the scenery, though. A private island day feels like a seamless extension of the cruise itself — just with sand between your toes. Cruise lines go to great lengths to maintain their brand experience on land: the food style, the crew service, and even, in some cases, your onboard beverage package stays active on the island. Your ship card works for purchases ashore too, so there’s no need to carry a wallet or worry about currency exchange.

The Underrated Perk Nobody Talks About Enough: Security

If you’ve ever felt a little on edge navigating a busy port city — watching your belongings, staying aware of your surroundings — a private island is a completely different experience.

Access is restricted exclusively to guests of the ship (or ships) docked that day. Every person you’ll encounter — whether lounging on the beach next to you or handing you a drink — is either a fellow passenger, a crew member, or island staff employed directly by the cruise line. The result? An environment where you can genuinely relax, let your guard down, and enjoy paradise without a second thought.

Private Island vs. Exclusive Destination: Know the Difference

Not every “private” stop is created equal, and it’s worth knowing the distinction before you sail.
A true private island is owned (or effectively controlled) by the cruise line. Everything is curated for guests, and many onboard perks carry over seamlessly to the shore experience.

An exclusive destination, on the other hand, is an area developed for the cruise line’s guests but where the land and businesses aren’t actually owned by the line. Security is still maintained — you won’t find outsiders wandering through — but most things ashore will come at an out-of-pocket cost, and payment works just like it would in any regular port town. Keep that in mind when budgeting for your day.

One Strong Recommendation: Step Outside the Bubble

Whether you’re on a true private island or an exclusive destination, it’s tempting to simply settle in and enjoy what the cruise line has laid out for you — and honestly, there’s nothing wrong with that, especially on your first visit. But after that? Explore.

Look into excursions that take you beyond the private zone and into the real fabric of the country you’re visiting. The curated experience is wonderful, but the unscripted moments — the local food, the culture, the people — are often what you’ll remember most years down the line. The hidden gem isn’t just the island itself. It’s knowing how to experience it fully. – ThatGuy (onboard)
