Today is a fun day. As you are reading this my mom and cousin are in the air over the north Atlantic on Delta Air Lines on the way to DTW. I used my wife’s Platinum Skymiles account to book the 100k each low level business class seats from GOT. I had to pay almost $500 each in taxes since the flights began in Europe and that makes me just crazy when the same trip starting here would have cost $100 each MAX all-in. Since my mom is 83 now she got “efficient” assistance in AMS. I got a text from the international lounge that she and my cousin were enjoying the trip so far and that the AMS lounge was much nicer than the one in GOT.
But that is all about me. What about the title of this post. Lisa & I went up Sunday afternoon to Detroit to see an old family friend and have a nice dinner later that night. I needed more stay credits this year to be GOLD with SPG for 2013 and it is just outstanding to me that points stays now count toward status each year. I have my SPG business card, that also gives me 2 bonus stay credits each year I hold it, so after this stay I only need 2 more nights and that will happen in October, one night before the ORD DO and one night after it! You can have BOTH the personal and the business SPG cards and get 4 nights credit each year. This is just tops as even a leisure traveler could get the 6 more nights needed for GOLD status. Also remember you get credit for more than one room if you book for, say, yourself and your grandma etc. when you stay somewhere!
So how did the Westin Southfield rate? It was wonderful! The outside of this property when you pull up is impressive and makes an architectural statement!
Once you step inside, the same modern feeling continues. Mr. Baldwin warmly greeted me at the front desk and seemed happy to see us. It is amazing to me that so many hotels do not get that the first impression makes a huge impact on your stay. This SPG property gets that!
We were upgraded to a nice corner suite as you can see here from our room.
This hotel does a bunch else right. Parking is free and it is abut a 30 min trip from the property to DTW airport if you want to use it as an option. A taxi or limo will run you about $50 each way if you don’t have a car. They have a small but nice pool and workout room.
The breakfast was a buffet for $15.99 each in the main dining room. It was fine and included juice and coffee or tea.
There was also an omelet station where my request for a few eggs over easy was happily accommodated for me.
We did have breakfast late and the only shortcoming of the stay was that our waiter was a bit inattentive, but I have found this to be the case at most buffets at many hotels. There is also a nice business center and an ATM across from the center.
I would come back in a heartbeat as this is a nice hotel. A bit out of the way from DTW airport but one to consider for your stay. Also speaking about SPG properties, as I mentioned yesterday, the 30,000 SPG card promotion for both cards END tomorrow 9AM EST! If you have been waiting to get these cards or to do a churn, now would be a very good time to jump before the deal is over! – Rene

Hah, I work in the attached office complex. The funny thing is, one time we had some out of towners staying at the Westin and they didn’t realize it was attached. They got lost in the parking lot trying to drive from the office building to the Westin and they could have walked it without ever going outside.
Rene, if you haven’t already, check out the Westin Book Cadillac in the D. Its a beautifully restored building blocks from Comerica park with some great restaurants (not to mention one of the best happy hours at Roast!).
@Brian – many thanks for the tip! I will – Rene 🙂
