I’m home this week — which sounds relaxing until you see my to-do list. The 12V battery in Artemis (my Tesla Model S) needs replacing, and I’m deep into an ambitious solar project I’ll tell you a lot more about in an upcoming post but for now know it all turned out perfect! Oh, if you’re traveling this weekend, please be careful out there — the heat across much of the country is no joke right now, and delays and cancellations are already piling up. Check your flight status before you leave the house.

Now, on to a week’s worth of content worth catching up on.

🛋️ The Best Card for Delta Lounge Access — And a July 15 Deadline

Long view bar at the Delta Sky Club Minneapolis G Concourse

Two things are happening right now that make this question more time-sensitive than usual. The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express cards — personal and business — both carry limited-time welcome offers that expire on July 15. And starting July 8, the rules for Centurion Lounge layover access are changing.

Chris laid out the full comparison this week. For dedicated Delta flyers, it’s not really a close call. The post also tackles the “just stack two Platinums” argument head-on — and the math still favors the Reserves. The full breakdown is here, and worth reading before July 15.

🧳 Delta’s 2,500-Mile Bag Guarantee: How to Actually Collect

Delta's new baggage carousels at LaGuardia Airport

Chris dusted off one of his most useful posts for summer travel season: Delta’s “Bags on Time” guarantee, which owes you 2,500 SkyMiles any time your checked bag takes more than 20 minutes to reach the carousel. The miles are real — one reader in the comments has collected nearly 600,000 of them over four years. The catch: Delta quietly slashed the claim window from three days to two hours. File at the airport, not from your couch. The working claim page is delta.com/bag-guarantee (not /baggage-guarantee — bookmark the right one now). And a pro tip from the comments: use Flighty or FlightAware to get Delta’s exact gate arrival time so you know precisely when your 20 minutes are up. The full post — including the airports that pay out most reliably — is here.

😤 Another Bank Shut Me Down — Then Tried to Keep My Money

Credit card

I’ve been in the points game long enough to have a bank or two decide they’ve had enough of me. This week I added a second one to the list — and it came with a twist. I accidentally sent a double payment, leaving a credit balance on the card. After the shutdown, I called to get my own money back. The rep refused. Said they’d investigated it and decided to keep it. I asked for a supervisor. They dropped the call. I cannot make this stuff up.

Eventually got it sorted — a supervisor confirmed the refund check is coming — but the whole episode was a reminder that “we’re keeping your overpayment” is not a legal position, no matter how confidently someone says it on a recorded line. The full story is here.

✈️ Delta Reclaim My Status: What I Got Wrong

Collage of Delta SkyMiles Medallion status luggage tags including Diamon, Gold, and Platinum

This one takes some guts to publish, and I respect Chris for writing it. Last year was rough — an injury sidelined him through most of the travel year, and he dropped from Platinum to Gold Medallion. He applied for Reclaim My Status, got approved, and then… life got busy again. Work picked up, his daughter had a class play, dance recitals, graduations.

The 90-day window closed without him hitting the $3,750 MQD target. And here’s the thing most people get wrong about Reclaim, including Chris: the MQD HeadStart from your Delta Amex cards doesn’t count toward the 90-day sprint. Only actual flights and card spending move the needle. He also got denied for a new Delta Business Platinum — turns out holding five active Amex non-Membership Rewards cards blocks approval for a sixth, which cost him $2,500 in HeadStart he was counting on for 2027 requalification.

The whole post is a genuinely useful cautionary tale. If you’re ever in a Reclaim situation, read this first. The full post is here.

📰 This Week’s News: World Cup Ticket Chaos and a Free Royal Caribbean Cruise

a whale tail in the water

World Cup fans getting burned at the gate. Thousands of fans who bought resale tickets through StubHub are arriving at stadiums to find their tickets don’t exist — the result of “speculative ticketing,” where resellers list seats they don’t actually own yet. One man drove four hours from New Jersey and his friend flew in from England. Neither got in. StubHub’s FanProtect guarantee promises “comparable” replacement tickets, which in practice can mean nosebleed seats in exchange for field-level ones. Buy directly through FIFA’s official platform. Don’t gamble on resale for a once-in-a-lifetime match.

Royal Caribbean is offering a free cruise to volunteers. The July 19 Serenade of the Seas Alaska sailing out of Vancouver is overbooked, and Royal Caribbean wants volunteers to switch. The offer: full refund of your cruise fare, a 50% future cruise credit, same or similar stateroom category on an alternate Alaska sailing, plus reimbursement of non-refundable pre-purchased travel expenses. That’s essentially a free cruise with money back. Nobody is being forced out, but they probably won’t need to ask twice.

130 Miami Airport concession workers have authorized a strike right as World Cup crowds flood MIA. The dispute is over wages — workers are asking for a $3.75/hour raise, the operator countered with roughly half that. About 10 restaurants and retail shops in Concourse D could go dark. Pack snacks if you’re transiting Miami in the next few weeks.

A Hawaii couple sold 31 rental cars and moved onto a cruise ship. Fifteen years, 57 countries, nearly 200 ports, and about $200,000 spent so far — and zero regrets. They document the whole thing on YouTube if you want to fall down that rabbit hole.

The full roundup — including the Boston Duck Tours accident and a Southwest deplaning video the internet can’t stop arguing about — is here.
