I’m genuinely pumped (pun appropriate to the topic) about the Q3 bonus categories Chase announced for the Chase Freedom Flex®.

You can earn 5X bonus points on eligible purchases made at/with:

  • Gas stations
  • EV charging stations
  • Public transit
  • Select live entertainment
  • United Way donations

This is the Q3 promotion for Chase Freedom Flex® cardmembers and people who hold the legacy Chase Freedom card (which is no longer open to new applicants). The promotional period runs from July 1 through September 30, 2025. (All information about the Chase Freedom Flex® card was collected independently by Eye of the Flyer. It has not been reviewed by the card issuer.)

Enrollment is required and you can do that here. You have until September 14 to sign up. So if you don’t yet have a no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex®, there’s still plenty of time to become a member and take advantage of the savings. The welcome offer is straightforward: earn 20,000 bonus points (or $200 cashback) after spending just $500 in eligible purchases within the first three months of card membership.

A maximum of 7,500 points can be earned during the promotion — that’s $1,500 in spending. We love Chase points because you can transfer them to a travel partner, use them to pay for travel through Chase Travel℠, apply them as a statement credit, get cashback transferred to your bank account, and more.

The Q2 categories — most notably Amazon — are still in play through June 30, but only if you already registered for them.

Cars and gas pumps are seen at a Shell gas station in Los Angeles, California.

Chase Flex Q3 Category Breakdown

I have three favorite seasons — and summer is one of them! (Winter? Not so much.) And these categories are great for summer.

Gas stations is the perennial crowd-pleaser. Chase’s definition is fairly tight — merchants that specialize in selling automotive gasoline, whether you pay at the pump or inside. Truck stops, boat marinas, and home heating companies are excluded, so don’t overthink it: if you pull into a Shell or Chevron and fill up, you’re fine. (I think aviation fuel is excluded, too. Sorry, private jet owners who actually read a points and miles blog.)

Remember, too, that many gas stations also sell gift cards. This promotion is a great way to essentially 5% on gift cards to give to someone else or yourself!

EV charging is a welcome addition for anyone who’s made the switch. Eligible merchants are those that sell EV charging services — at the station, via app, or through a subscription. A few things to know: free charging (like what some parking garages offer as an amenity) doesn’t count. Neither does residential charging or equipment purchases. If you’re plugging in at a ChargePoint or Electrify America station and paying for the kilowatts, you’re in.

Public transit covers more than most people expect: trains, buses, ferries, toll bridges and highways, and parking lots and garages. What it doesn’t cover is also worth knowing — airlines, rideshares like Uber and Lyft, and taxis are all excluded. So your morning Caltrain commute qualifies; your Thursday night Uber home does not.

Select live entertainment is the category I look forward to most. Eligible merchants sell tickets for live, in-person events — major sporting events, concerts, theater, museums, zoos and aquariums, amusement parks, tourist attractions. Ticket agencies acting on behalf of venues are included. Movie theaters, bowling alleys, casinos, and horse racing tracks are not. Keep in mind that Q3 runs through September 30 — which means this promotion is live for the early weeks of NFL and college football season.

United Way donations is the surprise entry this quarter. If you donate to United Way, do it directly through their official channels at unitedway.org to ensure the 5X applies. Local chapter donations may not be eligible depending on how they process transactions.

I’m a big Chase Freedom Flex® fan. The 5X quarterly categories are the main event, and I love that when a quarter doesn’t line up with my spending, I’m not out a dime — no annual fee. The card also earns 3X on dining and at drugstores year-round, which keeps it useful between promotions.

The Chase Freedom Flex® card earns Ultimate Rewards points -- which can help make a dream beach vacation come true!

Final Approach

The Chase Freedom Flex® Q3 2025 bonus categories cover gas stations, EV charging, public transit, select live entertainment, and United Way donations — all at 5X through September 30. Enrollment is required and the deadline is September 14. If you’re not yet a cardmember, the welcome offer is worth a look: 20,000 bonus points after $500 in spending in the first three months.

Travel rewards without the nonsense

The travel rewards space is full of sites telling you everything is amazing and every card is worth applying for. This isn't that.

Eye of the Flyer covers Delta, American Express, Chase, and the occasional thing that just seemed worth writing about — with actual math and an actual opinion.
