It’s no secret that a pair of major travel rewards and features cards will soon be refreshed. The question, though, is when?
The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express Refresh
American Express announced last month that its iconic The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express will undergo “major updates.”
Not-so-coincidentally — at least, in our minds — Amex’s press release came out the same time Chase refreshed Chase Sapphire Reserve® card.
However, Amex didn’t specify when the big changes will be implemented. The only explicit time frame is “later this year.”
My guess is that the cards’ refreshes will take place on September 18.
Why’s that?
The Amex Business Platinum Card’s Pay with Points 35% Rebate feature modifications take effect that day. .
Again, that’s a guess. I could be wrong.

Lock in the Annual Fees NOW
I’ve never seen a premium card refresh that didn’t include an annual fee hike.
Both the Amex Platinum and Business Amex Platinum cards feature an annual fee of $695. (See Rates & Fees for the Amex Platinum. See Rates & Fees for the Amex Business Platinum.)
There’s scuttlebutt that those rates will climb to at least $895.
So, if you’ve wanted either card but want to keep the current annual fee for a year, consider getting it now. Amex could announce soon something like, Hey, the annual fee is climbing to $XYZ on Date AB. Or they could just say, Ta-da! Here are the new annual fees effective immediately.
That said, the refreshed card’s welcome offers might be more substantial than they are now. What means more to you: locking in the current annual fees for one year? Or taking a gamble that there will be an amazing welcome offer that will make up the difference? (See Rates & Fees for the Amex Platinum. See Rates & Fees for the Amex Business Platinum.)
Whether or not existing card members can take advantage of the new features remains to be seen. Amex has generally been very good about that, though. Let’s hope they keep up the tradition.

Final Approach
A previously announced change to the Amex Business Platinum Card leads me to think we’ll both Platinum Card refreshes kick in on September 18.
That’s just a guess. We don’t have any insider information. We’re not trying to entice you to use any affiliate links.
And don’t forget — there’s very likely a new Delta premium card on the way!

+1 for your prediction. I’ve got a Business Platinum 150K NLL offer that I’m considering as I’ve already had the card several times. Expiration date: 09/17/25.
