One of the most dangerous things that can happen on a cruise ship is going overboard. It is a very rare occurrence and there are few times it is unintentional as has been confirmed by this NCL captain’s story. This event may be one of those rare times.
According to “TheStreet.com” The Disney Dream cruise ship was cruising back to Fort Lauderdale from a four night trip to the Bahamas when the incident happened. Unconfirmed reports are that a 5 year old young girl was leaning against the railing on the 4th floor for photos when she went overboard.
Her father then leapt overboard to save her. Both of them survived hitting the water and the Dream launched a rescue boat and was able to pick them both up as you can see below.
@cmd.91 Today while on the Disney Dream, we witnessed nothing short of a miracle. #disneydream #rescue #overboard
Thankfully the seas were relatively calm as you can see from the video and all credit also goes to the crew of The Disney Dream for their quick action to stop the ship, get a rescue boat in the water and also clearly the dad for his heroic risking his life to go in after her. This event could have turned out much worse under most conditions when a ship is at sea.
It is very very rare anyone ever survives going overboard on a cruise ship and if the fall does not kill you being lost at sea is the likely outcome. Even at the dock one must be careful as just this past April a child went into the sea while visiting Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay and thankfully also was rescued.
Cruise safe everyone! – René
