Capital One cranked up the promotional reward for one of its credit cards — and meeting the minimum spending requirement can net you almost $2,000 cashback.
New Capital One Spark Cash members can earn $1,500 when you spend $15,000 in eligible purchaes on your card within three (3) months of being approved for the card. (Learn here how to apply for this promotion.)
The card’s earning structure is pretty straightforward:
- Earn 2% cash back on every purchase
- Earn 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One’s travel booking site
So, if you reach the minimum spending requirement on just “every purchase” stuff, you’ll earn $300 cashback (2% of $15,000 = $300). Add that to your $1,500 cashback bonus and you’re suddenly $1,800 richer.
The Capital One Spark Cash is a small business credit card; that’s likely why the minimum spending requirement is rather high for such a short period of time. But keep in mind that you might already have a small business and not know it. Consider some examples:
- “Selling stuff on eBay” (or online) is the classic example
- Blogging for profit
- Contract work (graphic design, photography, photo editing, etc)
- Consulting services
- Self-publishing books to Amazon, Draft2Digital, Apple, Smashwords, etc.
- Driving rideshare
- Driving food delivery
- Babysitting
- Housesitting
- Dogsitting
- Selling arts or crafts
If someone pays you for products or services, that can be considered a business. You don’t need a corporation-LLC (that’s a whole ‘nother topic). Your Social Security Number will do in place of a corporate ID or EIN. (We’re not financial or tax professionals. All of this is based on our own experience.)
“But This Isn’t a ‘Travel Card!'”
I can hear the angry townsfolk screaming, “Credit card salesman! This isn’t a travel card!”
While some people prefer proprietary miles and points (i.e., Delta SkyMiles®, World of Hyatt points, etc.) and flexible points (American Express® Membership Rewards®, Chase points, Capital One Miles, etc), others enjoy cash back rewards AND they like to travel. Last time I checked, airlines, hotels, rideshares, trains, and amusement parks happily accept cash. Cash back cards are great tools for some people to help save money on expenses, too.
