The United States State Department issued a warning for citizens traveling to one of the world’s most popular destinations: Italy.
The warning, dated May 23, suggests travelers “Exercise increased caution in Italy due to terrorism,” adding “There is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Italy.”
Great. Just in time for summer travel season. The advisory is a level 2. That’s a step above “Exercise normal precautions” and one below “Reconsider travel.”
I’m curious if the State Department received intel that some terrori cells have something brewing or what.
Basically, be wary of your surroundings — especially crowded places.
If you’re planning to visit Italy, will this affect your plans?

The raised alert is more likely to be linked to the Vatican’s Jubilee year. With increased tourism, a new pope, and the Jubilee celebrations, more eyes will be on Italy, and hence, it may become a focus for criminality, including terrorism.
Good to know! Thanks!
All it takes is one crazy terrorist to start shooting, wield a knife, or drive a car into a crowd.
One should decide if they really want to see Italy. If so, be alert of surroundings.
Moldova has a level 2 warning. I am not so interested in Moldova and would not go. The UK has a level 2 warning, but I would go to the UK.
Level 1 countries include Singapore, Paraguay, Taiwan, Palau, Tuvalu, Australia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein. I would not hesitate to visit any of these wonderful countries.
In the US in 2023 there were just under 20000 deaths from violent crimes. In Italy for the same year there were 332. Even allowing for a population difference of 340m vs 60m Lets be generous and say times 6. I will leave you to work out which is the safer country to visit!
