A late night at work, an early-ish morning flight, and a free night certificate allowed me to stay at the hotel closest to LAX: the Hyatt Regency Los Angeles International Airport.

Why I Chose the Hyatt Regency LAX

I actually live in the City of Los Angeles. But a client hired me for a job slated to end around 11:00 PM. My flight to Detroit (DTW) the following morning boarded at 7:15 AM. My home is 40 minutes each way from both the job and the airport. So, I opted to stay at an airport hotel. I could get at least five or six hours of sleep and not worry about early morning traffic.

The Hyatt Regency LAX is very close to the airport.

It’s an easy, 10-15 minute outdoor walk to Terminals 1, 2, and 3. In fact, I often see pilots and flight attendants walking to and from the Hyatt. I know of at least two airlines that use it for short layovers.

There’s also a complimentary shuttle that runs pretty frequently.

The QuikPark LAX and Hyatt Regency airport hotel shuttle is seen in Los Angeles, California.

I often park in the QuikPark ramp behind the Hyatt when traveling from LAX. We usually walk to the Delta Air Lines terminals (check in at T3) to get some exercise. (Quik tip, pun fully intended: use CheapAirportParking.org to book your QuikPark parking reservations. We’ve saved a ton of money doing that.)

My World of Hyatt Credit Card gives members one Free Night Award each year, valid at Category 1-4 properties. The LAX Hyatt Regency is a Category 3. I didn’t love burning the cert there. But cash and points redemptions were too high. Other hotels in the area were too expensive. Plus, the Hyatt’s convenience is tough to beat.

Standard King Bedroom at Hyatt Regency LAX

There was no line when I checked in. I was up to my room very quickly.

I stayed at the LAX Hyatt Regency a few years ago. My wife noticed a kind of smoky, “burnt” smell in the room. I guess that must be the Hyatt’s thing because it’s still there.

Don’t get me wrong: it’s not awful. But the smell is, well, different. I don’t like it. Is it from jet exhaust? (The Hyatt is close to LAX’s north runways.) Is the HVAC system wonky? Yes? Who knows?

The standard rooms are nothing special. But they get the job done just fine.

The image shows a modern hotel room with a large bed featuring white linens and pillows. There is a nightstand with a lamp on the left side of the bed. Above the bed, a piece of abstract art is mounted on the wall. To the right, there is a dark-colored sofa with a yellow cushion, and a window with closed curtains. A set of hanging pendant lights is positioned above the nightstand. The room has a striped carpet and a neutral color scheme. a room with a bed and a television The image shows a small, modern room setup with a round white table and two yellow chairs. On the table, there is a black thermos, a plastic water bottle, and some papers. The floor has a gray carpet with a striped pattern, and there are gray curtains in the background. A mirror is mounted on the wall above the table.

You will hear jets departing from the closest runway (24L). The rumbles are especially noticeable late in the afternoon and late night when heavy, widebody aircraft depart for international destinations. If that doesn’t bother you, great!

Something lacking from the room: a good work desk. I would’ve been a little cranky had I needed the room for a morning or afternoon. That table is fine, I guess. But the chairs weren’t conducive to sitting and working.

Then again, this isn’t a resort or hotel where you spend a bunch of time. Most people don’t go, Hey, let’s visit Los Angeles and stay at the Hyatt LAX for a few days! (I know people who do but they’re fellow aviation nerds.) Much like most airport hotels, it’s not a destination property.

The image shows a hotel room closet area. Inside the closet, there are several hangers on a rod, an iron, and an ironing board. Above, there is a shelf with a bag or storage box. To the right, there is a safe on a shelf. Below the safe, there are two drawers. In front of the closet, there is a suitcase with a smaller bag on top. On the door, there is an evacuation plan and a sign about rewards. The image shows a hotel room setup with a wall-mounted flat-screen TV on the left. To the right, there is a built-in shelf unit. The top shelf holds an ice bucket and glasses, while the middle shelf has a yellow tray with two disposable coffee cups and a coffee maker. Below, there is a small refrigerator. A piece of luggage with a handle is visible on the floor to the right.Bad news for René deLambert: the Hyatt LAX offers TAZO tea and not Twinings.

The image shows three packets of Tazo tea on a yellow surface. The packets include two "Organic Awake English Breakfast" and one "Organic Calm Chamomile." There is also a white cup with a blue label partially visible at the top left corner.

There are plenty of bedside outlets for you to plug in your devices.

The image shows a black digital alarm clock with the brand name "cubie time" on top. It features two USB ports, a central knob for setting the alarm, and a button labeled "Snooze / Dimmer." The digital display at the bottom shows the time "11:51." The clock is placed on a light-colored surface.

The image shows a black wall-mounted panel with various electrical and connectivity outlets. It includes two standard power outlets, two USB ports labeled "10A MAX," an HDMI port, and two additional USB ports. There is also a blue button with a Bluetooth symbol and a music note icon. The panel is set against a dark wood-textured background. The image shows a black electrical outlet panel mounted on a wooden surface. The panel includes two standard three-prong electrical sockets and one USB port. There is a label next to the USB port indicating "15A MAX, 120V AC, 60Hz."

I slept OK. The pillows weren’t fantastic and a little soft for my liking. On the other hand, I was a little amped up after work, excited for my trip, and anxious about making sure I didn’t oversleep in the morning. All of that is a bad combination.

The bathroom is nice and bright. It’ll wake you up at 5:00 AM! 🙂

The image shows a modern bathroom with a glass-enclosed shower on the left, featuring a rainfall showerhead and a shelf with toiletries. There are white tiles on the shower wall. A towel is hanging on the shower door. To the right, there is a toilet with a roll of toilet paper on a holder. Above the toilet, a towel is hanging on a rack attached to a patterned wall. The bathroom has a clean and minimalist design. The image shows a modern bathroom with a geometric patterned wallpaper. There is a white toilet with a roll of toilet paper on a holder. Above the toilet, a towel rack holds two white towels. The sink area features a round basin with a sleek faucet, set in a white countertop. A large, illuminated mirror is mounted on the wall above the sink. Below the countertop, there are additional towels and a hairdryer. The shower area is visible in the reflection of the mirror, with a glass door and white tiles. The image shows a bathroom countertop with a neatly rolled white towel standing upright. Next to it, there is a rectangular white dish holding a wrapped bar of cleansing soap. The background features a textured wall with a geometric pattern. The image shows three bottles mounted on a wall in a bathroom setting. The bottles are labeled as "Body Wash," "Conditioner," and "Shampoo," all from the "Pharmacopia Natural Bodycare" brand. They are part of the "Argan Oil Collection" and are noted to be made with organic Aloe Vera, cruelty-free, and vegan. The bottles are held in a metal holder attached to white tiled walls. The image shows a modern shower area with white tiled walls. There is a chrome showerhead and a handheld shower attachment. A small shelf holds a folded white towel. A glass door is partially visible on the right side.

The outdoor pool was closed for repair, as noted on the amenity sheet.

The image is a printed information sheet from Hyatt Regency Los Angeles International Airport. It includes details about WiFi access, airport shuttle service, and food and beverage options. The WiFi network is named "Hyatt_Wifi" with an access code provided. The airport shuttle operates 24 hours a day, leaving every 15-20 minutes. Food and beverage options include Beckett’s Coffee Shop, Beckett’s Breakfast, Beckett’s Lounge, Beckett’s Bar, and Beckett’s Room Dash/Service, with specific operating hours and pricing. Additional amenities mentioned are an ice machine on every floor, a water dispenser on the 6th and 12th floors, a 24/7 fitness center in the penthouse, and a temporarily closed pool. Contact information for requests and printing needs is also provided.

The image is a screenshot of a mobile device displaying a room service menu for "Beckett's Room Dash." It includes the following information:

- "Food. Thoughtfully Sourced. Carefully Served."
- Operating hours: Friday-Sunday 5am-11am for breakfast, Monday-Sunday 5pm-11pm for dinner.
- Instructions to order by dialing 7103 from the guestroom.
- A delivery charge of $4.00, a 20% service charge, and applicable sales tax will be added to all orders. All service charges and gratuities are paid to the waitstaff.
- Two buttons labeled "RoomDash Breakfast Menu" and "RoomDash Dinner Menu."
- The website "scnv.io" is displayed at the bottom.

Final Approach

The Hyatt Regency LAX is a decent place to stay for a night. I really don’t like whatever the heck smells up the rooms (especially when the lobby smells good!). But it’s fine, does the job, and it’s location is fantastic.

Hyatt’s first-ever hotel was at LAX.

Hyatt really needs to fire its designers. The decor in Hyatt Regencies is awful. That room looks more like a Courtyard or Four Points when you’d expect Hyatt Regency to be more like Westin or Hilton.

I’ve stayed there a few times and have a stay booked next week before a 7:00 am flight to Hawaii. For me it’s great place. Rooms are nice and spacious, location is GREAT, the food at the restaurant is good and my wife approves of it.
    what’s not to like? 🙂

My wife and I have a room booked there when we arrive in LAX at 10 p.m. on June 19th. We are using a certificate as well. Thanks for the review. The hotel will serve it’s purpose for a night for sure.

I’ve stayed there the past several years for SpotLAX. Can’t say I ever notice a smell in the room. As I recall, breakfast was pretty good too. All in all I’ve been quite satisfied with the property. You’re just a sensitive guy. Chris

Had breakfast there during SpotLAX last year and it was delish. A group of us are staying there during SpotLAX this year versus the H, which is getting too pricey.
