I feel like it was only last week that summer was wrapping up and we discussed plans for Fall. And now, hello! Today is New Year’s Eve?! What the?!
A whole bunch of credit card statement credit offers expire tonight.
If you’re panicking and not sure how to use them, here are some ideas!
Order In: Entrees, Sides, Appetizers, Desserts, Drinks (American Express, Chase)
After years of being a New Year’s Eve Scrooge, I now love December 31. My wife and I cook a fancy dinner for her parents.
Serving cocktails, snacks, appetizers, two entrees, and a dessert are time-consuming, both in terms of preparation and shopping. Not to mention, we both work today until mid-afternoon, which is when food prep starts.
That’s when Uber Eats and Instacart can come in handy. Let those services pick up food and bring it to you.
A few years ago, a couple of guests were a few minutes away when my wife asked, “You got the appetizers in the oven, right?”
Whoops.
That’s when I realized, Wait a minute! We still still have $45 in Uber Cash from my The Platinum Card® from American Express and American Express® Gold Card available! (Amex Platinum members enjoy Uber VIP status and earn up to $200 in Uber savings on rides or Uber Eats eats orders in the US annually. Receive $15 in Uber Cash each month, plus a bonus $20 in December. Amex Gold members enjoy up to $120 in Uber savings on rides or eats orders in the US annually, distributed as $10 each month. Uber Cash and Uber VIP status is available to the primary cardholder only. An Amex Card must be selected as the payment method for your Uber or Uber Eats transaction to redeem the Amex Uber Cash benefit. Enrollment is required. Terms apply. Uber Cash deposits are made monthly and expire if not used. To receive this benefit, you must have downloaded the latest version of the Uber App and your eligible Amex Platinum or Amex Gold Card must be a method of payment in your Uber account. The Amex Benefit may only be used in the United States.)
So, I ordered a couple of appetizers from a nearby restaurant. Uber Eats to the rescue! I regularly use my Uber Eats credits to order sides or appetizers when I cook big meals.
Instacart is another great option — especially for grocery stores, liquor stores, and a bunch of other merchants that can save the day.
Keep in mind that Uber Eats and Instacart also accept PayPal, which is one of the Chase Freedom Flex® card’s 5% bonus cashback categories this quarter.
Amex Gold members: if you haven’t yet used your $10 monthly dining credit, consider ordering in something from Grubhub. Cardmembers can earn up to $10 in monthly statement credit when using their Gold Card to pay for purchases at these select restaurants and delivery services:
-
- Grubhub
- The Cheesecake Factory
- Goldbelly
- Wine.com
- Five Guys
Instacart, Uber Eats, and Grubhub also deliver alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
Dine Out (American Express)
Some Amex members can enjoy statement credits dining out tonight.
Five cards feature Resy statement credits — a benefit we think is quite underrated (at least, for some people in select cities).
- American Express® Gold Card:
- Up to $100 Resy Credit each year: Earn up to $50 in statement credit from January through June and up to $50 from July through December
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
- Earn up to $240 each calendar year ($20 per calendar month)
- Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card
- Earn up to $120 each calendar year ($10 per calendar month)
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card
- Earn up to $240 each calendar year ($20 per calendar month)
- Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card
- Earn up to $120 each calendar year ($10 per calendar month)
Just pay with your eligible card. There’s no need to use the Resy app for payment. It’s super simple.
Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card members: remember your $300 Brilliant Dining Credit. You can earn up to $25 in monthly statement credit when using your card to pay for purchases at restaurants worldwide, up to $300 each calendar year. If you haven’t yet used December’s installment, this might be an opportunity to treat yourself to dinner or drinks somewhere out on the town.
Amex Gold Card holders: if you haven’t yet used your $10 monthly dining credit, perhaps a visit to Cheesecake Factory is in order?
Let Someone Else Drive
According to the Liljegren Law Group, “January 1st is actually the worst time for drunk driving and accidents caused by drunk drivers.”
So, if you plan to go out tonight and have even a couple of alcoholic drinks, consider taking a taxi or rideshare service.
Again, that’s where rideshare statement credits can come in handy.
- Amex Platinum: $35 Uber Cash deposit
- Amex Gold: $10 Uber Cash deposit
Cardholders of the following products can earn up to $10 in statement credits each month (up to $120 annually) on U.S. rideshare purchases made with Uber, Lyft, Curb, Revel, and Alto when the rides are charged to their cards:
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card
